I use Padus DiscJuggler for this with 14 writers, though these days Nero, CDR-WI, and Feurio can do this sort of thing too.

It woiuld have been great if CDA could write a raw CD image file for use in the above (without need for cuesheets, etc) to save unnecessary intermediate steps of writing a CD, and reading in the image for duplication.

I would love to have that feature too, I have requested it in the "Product Suggestion" part of this site.
Feels like you do the job twice when first burning a CD to create an image from it with another program. Then how would I know that the image is without errors as the CD-audio format has not that bit-by-bit error correction?

That's the point. A written-then-read CD will by then have two suerflous accumulations of errors before you start duplicating !
