"must" I have SP2 installed for Vegas 8 to install

jsut curious, this system has been rather flaky with updates and eht elike since inception, and i am yet to have SP2 installed on it. This is simply becuae if one element is "updated" other elements can be affected, In turn, i have left Sp2 off this system for now.
Microsoft have not been much help and the help im requiring pretty much puts a hefty price tag on any assistance i might recieve from them.
Sadly, its a driver HW conflict issue in addition to basic windows setups liek IE, outlook, wireless router configs, etc which are affected. Franky i dont have time to mess with it.

Now ive tried to install Photoshop CS3 on this machine, as well as Canon console SW.. and these have nothign to do with SMS.. however it seems now that the trend of minimal requirements is coming to the fore and i just want to know if Vegas 8 will allow an instal on an XP system with SP1

My lappy wont have an issue, but im certian that on this main machine, im bound to have issues sooner or later

Read the first line http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/product.asp?PID=457&PageID=108from the official "System Requirements" Vegas Pro 8 SONY site.[/link]

Yes, and installing SP2 just might solve all your problems, too. I know a number of people that were complaining about issues with WinXP until they installed SP2.

And what about this? :

"Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0"

I thought that version was supposed to be flaky.

in my experience all of .net is flaky. I didn't even realize 2.0 was "official" yet & a couple weeks ago I saw 3 (beta or not I'm not sure).

If you are still having problems with a service pack that came out in 2004 - you seriously need to investigate your hardware and software. SP2 is simply NOT an issue here in 2007.

What "problems" are you having exactly?

I can confirm that I, too, have a machine that dies after XP SP2 is installed. SP1 runs fine. Fortunately I had made a drive image just before installing SP2 and was able to get it back within a few minutes (after struggling for hours trying to get SP2 working).

So, yes, it can be a problem with some machines. I figured when it became necessary I'd get a new machine that supported SP2. For now, I have a couple others that DO have SP2 so I'm not too concerned yet.

The best answer to the question will be to wait and try it. If it works, fine. You WILL need .NET 3.0, though, which says it requires SP 2 so my guess is it won't work under SP 1.

The authoring tools require SP2 so there is no way around the requirement. I have not seen problems with newer computers and SP2, maybe it's time for an upgrade?

jetdv,

Please explain these in a little more detail:

1. "a machine that dies after XP SP2 is installed"
2. " struggling for hours trying to get SP2 working"

What exactly is happening?

I was able to install it and then I got the network/internet working.

I then rebooted the machine and the network/internet would no longer work no matter what I tried.

I reverted back to SP1 and the network has worked fine ever since.

I talked to the manufacturer about it and they recommended a BIOS update. I could try that to see if it solved the issues but it's working fine for everything else (messing with the BIOS is not my favorite thing to do!) Besides, I figured I'd be getting a new machine by the time I really needed it anyway.

im with Jetdv on this one.. mainly issues with networking, but also had some issues with simple browsing online and the fact that i realy didnt need half the crap that was "offered"

im still working on it though..

as for my HW, on this machine ive got a P4 3.0 extreme 1gb corsair ram, 2tb storage, 80gb system drive, nividia 6800 GT, SBlive audigy,

built it myself.. never had a problem
My dual core lappy and Dual core machine bother have SP2, when i ran an update for the lappy, it puked the system, i was lucky enough be able to revert back to the original instal.. but again this defeats the purpose...

DJ/jetdv,

Seems that the both of you have some kind of strange hardware issue...when I think SP2 - networking NEVER crosses my mind - I am am doing nothing special over here - every box on my network uses the built-in "on the motherboard" NIC and they just work.

How are you guys going about installing SP2? Always recommend a clean install from a WinXP CD that has SP2 built right in. I remember having some issues years ago when I tried to "add" SP2 to an already installed instance of XP.

Anyway - SP2 is safe as milk some three years down the road and it will be required for Vegas 8 from the looks of the system requirements.

I have seen a very few number of machines that crash after installing SP2 because they needed a BIOS upgrade.

But, I've also personally seen several hundred machines upgaded to SP2 without a problem, but there are odd occasions where something doesn't go well, but that's been in older, older machines.

Machines as old as Grazie. :)

Yep. I have 4 workstations up right now - ranging in age from 2001 to 2006 - each one hand built and each one running Windows XP SP2 - slipstreamed with all hotfixes to August of 2007.

The only SP2 glitch that I can recall involves my Matrox P750 on my main studio workstation when connected to my twin LCDs using the DVI connectors. If I perform a clean Windows XP SP2 install on that box - the machine will never actually boot to the Windows startup screen and the desktop....it just hits a certain point and up comes a black screen.

I have since documented the correct workaround to that issue...but that's the only one. And trust me - I have ran an enormous amount of hardware thru this place...a few years back I still had my original 1996 Dell XPS Dimension 200 running Windows XP SP2...worked great!

I never said SP2 wasn't safe. I just said it had a conflict with my particular machine (and, obviously, someone else's too). I've never considered it a big deal as I'll get a new one at some point.

BTW, my parents have the SAME computer but several months newer - theirs is running SP2.
