My Time-line goes nuts

Lately on Vegas Pro 13 when I go to trim the leading edge of a clip the whole work-space goes nuts. Well, I go nuts because suddenly the video time line is expanded and a narrow space with a X is added below the video track. As there is a B icon and I think somewhere there must be an A icon, I assume it is some kind of cross-fade attempt.

In addition, between the newly added clip and the old clip, a grayish, (like a film negative), clips appears bridging the two. Did I mention that the preview video window shrinks into a squeezed 'tank slot' where people look like munchkins. When I play the video it returns to normal until the video stops. Sometimes the display is split between two clips.

This all happen because of one innocent clip in the time line. Not every time, but too many times. I found that I can get rid of the expanded video time line by right clicking on the time line and unchecking “Expanded time line”. The rest of the mess never clears.

I've use Vegas for years and have not run into this before. Perhaps 13 has something new that I don't know about. I've started some projects over 3 times to get rid of the mess, but one innocent click and I've to the' A X B faded time line and video display mess'.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have a St. Pat's parade to shoot tomorrow, and the idea of editing with the leprechauns messing with my timeline is giving me the willies.

Thanks,
Dave

Did you double-click at the interface of two events on the timeline? If so, do it again.

VP13 has the "expanded edit mode" which is what you see when you do me click at the cut between two events.

As soon as I click in front of a clip, the line expands with an X and a B below that. Also the leading edge of the new clip turns red.

It should require a double click. Have you altered your mouse settings to perform a doubleclick?

Great thought. I did change some settings but it was for the roll. Doesn't someone use this ' X B' thing in there editing and what is it for? How do you tell the genie to go back in the bottle?

, then open Help / Contents and Index / Search for "Expanded Edit Mode".

"How do you tell the genie to go back in the bottle?"

Double-click on the end of the last event on the A track or strike the number 5 on the numeric keypad.

John:
I think that may be the problem and a way to solve it. I try playing with it later today.
Thanks for the help...everyone.

Dave

Update - Well, I pulled in the original project and clicked all over the place and it never repeated the problem.

I know it will show up again, but now I know how to resolve it. I hope when it happens again hitting #5 will restore my preview monitor as well. Time will tell.
