My VEGAS Pro AAF ProTools export step-by-step guide

Hello,

after some research and experiences, I made my own guide for independent filmmakers like me who have to sometimes export the project audio for external ProTools postprocessing (e.g. broadcast programme etc.). This workflow assumes minimal audio processing in VEGAS Pro. All audio processing and mixing are supposed to be done in ProTools. Experienced with version (13), 14, 15, 16 of VEGAS Pro with a 45min documentary film project with 500+ audio clips for National Czech TV broadcaster. Sorry for my English. :)

  1. Make a backup of your current Vegas project. You should also render compatible video and audio mix as a reference.
  2. Check your project audio properties ("File -> Properties") to meet the required quality (check bit depth and sample rate, usually 24 bit (better) or 16 bit; sample rate 48 kHz (standard) or 96 kHz. Set "Resample and stretch quality" as "Best".
  3. Remove all video tracks from the project. Make sure you do not remove any audio clips linked to video events. If you remove video tracks, it should be fine.
  4. Organize your audio tracks, make them cleaner. Do not mix mono clip events and multichannel events in one track. You can also organize or add some Markers.
  5. Make all stereo (or multichannel) tracks to multiple mono tracks. Run script "Stereo to Mono" from the main menu "Tools -> Scripting -> Stereo to Mono".
  6. Remove all unused media from Project Media. (Remove only media references, do not delete media files from your storage!)
  7. Now converting all media audio to industry standard format with the overlaps: Select from the main menu "File -> Save as". Create a new folder, select project name and before you save the project, mark "Copy Media with project". The "Copy Media Options" window appears. Check "Create trimmed media of source media". Here you can set extra head and tail of each clip in seconds (2 sec are the default and industry standard also). Confirm. This creates a new VEG project and renders all audio into the project folder as WAV with parameters set in Project Audio Properties (see point 2).
  8. Remove ALL audio plug-ins from the project. (Tracks, event clips, master output etc.) Remove also the default Track FX (Track Noise Gate, Track EQ, Track Compressor). This avoids some errors during AAF export.
  9. Export the project as AAF: "File -> Export -> Pro Tools AAF File" into another folder. This task creates AIFF files from WAV and copies WAV files also. You can remove the WAV files form the AAF folder optionally to reduce the project size.
  10. Check your AAF project (Import as a new project) or open it in Pro Tools.
