i know its hard to beleive, but it was truly 25 tracks of 720x480 DV footage. duncan was quite clear about this, and i double-checked the preview window status display to confirm he wasnt pulling a fast one...

holy buckets! i'm amazed you were able to (a) create the 5x5 video wall without a script so easily and (b) get performance similar to the demo even without a SAN.
yeah, doing the opacity slider thing really shows off the ability vegas has to provide instant feedback.
very cool, cheesehole. i'm impressed.

Thanks nate,

I was really impressed too.

The lack of SAN wasn't an issue because I used a single DV clip - so the bottleneck wasn't disk IO it was somewhere else... probably cpu/memory. I'll try using an uncompressed source file to see if that makes a difference.

Do you know if the preview window was set for Draft / Preview / Good / Best?

Serious work must be done on external monitor (firewire preview) !!!

With external preview, I get:
http://vital.video.free.fr/25tracks.veg

draft Auto > 15fps
draft Full > 10fps
Preview Auto > 13fps
Preview Full > 5fps
Good Auto > 7fps
Good Full > 2fps
Best Auto > less than 2fps
Best Full > 1 Fps

Very far from real time !!!

The only NLE who can make real time preview (full dv quality) on external monitor is Canopus Edius 2(ohci version !). Not with 25 composited tracks, but with reasonable effect number. Try it, you will be very impressed.
Once again, I love Vegas and use it every day, but I stay persuaded Vegas can't read 25 tracks composted tracks in real time (even with hardware acceleration) !

Ps: sorry for my bad english, I’m french.

OK, think about this for a sec. What was seen at NAB was 25 iterations of the SAME video. Would then processing requirements be different with 25 miniature versions of DIFFERENT video?

Forgot about that part. Here's my results from Firewire:
Draft (Full) - 20fps
(Dragging opacity slider does 18fps)
Preview (Full) - 7.5 fps
Good (Full) - 4.5 fps
Best (Full) - 3.5 fps
(Dragging opacity slider in Preview / Good / Full had no effect on frame rate)
