TUESDAY
10:00- 1:00 Case Study- Sony Vegas in the Broadcast Environment
John Rios
Vegas: Case Study:

Want to see how a pro uses Sony’s Vegas software in an everyday working environment? Spend time with John Rios of WFAA TV in Dallas. John is the Producer/Editor for the award winning lifestyle shows “LAVida” and “Metro.”

Rios was impressed when he first saw Vegas used to rough cut a full segment of their "LaVida" show in under 10 minutes, a task that typically takes at least two hours, using footage from their archives. After that, he was sold. John now uses Vegas for an increasing number of tasks ranging from rough cuts to titles and transitions.

Rios is also excited about the flexibility of Vegas as WFAA starts to move more aggressively into HD and archiving media. Directors, editors, and shooters at WFAA are impressed by what Vegas can do. Come and see why.

WEDNESDAY
10:00- 1:00 Case Study- Sony ACID used for Scoring Video
Gary Chang
ACID: Case Study
Want to see how a pro uses ACID in an everyday working environment? Spend time with Gary Chang as he discusses using Sony’s ACID while scoring audio for video in high profile projects.
Gary has more than 70 features and television projects to his credit, including The Breakfast Club, Under Siege, Miami Blues, Stephen King's six-hour mini-series, Rose Red, and seven projects for director John Frankenheimer, including The Island of Dr. Moreau and 52 Pick-Up.

One of Gary's signature elements used in his compositions and film scores is ambient music that drifts throughout the film. When combined with orchestral accompaniment, this layering creates a dense, complex texture against the picture. Again, Gary uses ACID to make this defining effect occur. "ACID allows me a method of easily constructing electronic environments that originally may have take days to create initially. I take the original elements apart and ACIDize them so that I can easily transpose, manipulate, and modify the pieces for the score.”

Gary's career has given him the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology and musical pioneers. Learn how an artist with his background and credentials makes ACID an important part of his creative process.

I'll probably be lost in the tunnels beneath Las Vegas, too. This is in addition to appearances in the Sony booth, Audio Technica booth, and Artbeats booth.

Jesus. How long is this damn thing? Seems impossible to attend all the ones someone might want to attend. Do they allow video cameras during presentations for companies that have more than one person going and that split up so they can get the most on a bigger variety of subjects?
p@mast3rs wrote on 2/7/2005, 2:33 PM
Spot,

Has it ever occurred to you or the Vasst crowd to start videoing these presentations and then offering them on DVD for those of us who cant attend these functions? I am sure many would be interested in something like this if offered, I know I would.
Spot|DSE wrote on 2/7/2005, 2:49 PM
Some presenters allow videotaping, most don't. I can't in many of mine due to the nature of what I'll be showing. For instance, I've got footage from some hit television series that are current, and some of the footage doesn't air for a few weeks yet. It can't be videotaped for obvious reasons.
A lot of these sessions are already part of the VASST dvd series. "Now Hear This" is 3 of the audio sessions contained on two DVD9's.
The main draw of the conference is that you get to interface with the instructor and ask him/her questions related to you specifically. It's not at all uncommon for people to show up with a binder filled with questions.
p@mast3rs wrote on 2/7/2005, 2:55 PM
Understood, but its very likely the questions being asked are the same questions those that cant attend have as well and would greatly benefit from someone else who could attend asking the question.

It was just a thought. :)

Spot,

Are the events you show on the NAB site by date? There are several that I want to make and need the dates to plan our arrival and departure. We will have about 5 days to work with. Thanks for the heads up.
Randy

EDIT: Never mind. Found them on the schedule. Woo-Hoo!
EDIT EDIT: Well, found some of them. Will be patient.
