Naming Events?

Is there a way to "name" events?

Basically what I have is a longish (1h 30 minutes) video with about 250 vents in, taken from 4 tapes. I want to go through these events and name them and then ideally get a report of how long each event is and what name it has.

What I am trying to do is get the video down to nearer 1 hour and to do this I want to take out some of these events to make it fit. Using such a report would make this easier (rather than doing it manually).

The "Edit View" does most of this but there is no easy way to see what each event is?

Any thoughts, is it possible or is this one for a future Vegas version Wish List?

For what purpose? It seems to me to be more of a 'make work' project than anything helpful. If the events are part of a project then simply render the project. If they are a bunch of seperate events culled from a project then render each event seperately if you wish.

Here's my wish... people actually LEARN video editing, meaning actually do it hands on rather than inventing more ways to muddy the waters. Sorry if I sound abrassive, but I do large projects all the time with multiple events like the one you're talking about.

A report such as you wish would do nothing but slow me down. Since at some point I'll assume most or all the events will become part of the project a simpler better way is just get started. Edit the first event, then go to the next one. If event two doesn't seem to belong after event one, then slide it up out of the way to another track, then go to event 3 and so on and so on. In no time you'll have a rough draft of how your project should look. With your method spending all that time over analyzing all you'll have is a pretty list. I'll be well on my way to actually finishing the project.

Right-click the event, choose properties, and type in a new name. This name will appear in the Edit Details screen.

Thanks jetdv, I must admit I expected changing that name to rename all the events from the same tape, but it does what I was looking for!

Another way - and at the same time retaining the original Event Name - is to use the "Comment" field. This is great because I can Capture and then review within the Bins to give something a bit more memorable than "Event 1" "Event 2" . . . . It also makes me more disciplined about getting my workflow in order and have an excellent way to Sort and Search. Takes time - but I'm looking throujgh the stuff already, so typing something done in the Comment field is perfect for me . . . it also removes further work down the road . .

Hope this also helps . . try it . . you might like it - yeah?

Well, that WAS an abrasive and uncalled for comment. Just because you have a style of editing you like, doesn't mean that it is the ONLY efficient and productive way to edit. Some people like to have names for their clips, it helps them organize, track, and re-organize them. They may have in mind using them in some other project, or for a stock footage library. Possibly they need to discuss the project with a client, or a committee of them, and clip names would be useful tags.

videobear & BB, as far as I'm concerend you're both correct.

Presently I'm learning different ways to get my workflow up to speed. Maybe one day I'll drop "naming" stuff. But in the meantime I'm needing to, well, learn at my own pace. That's all . . . giving myself a far chance at seeing what I've filmed and then have it in some order is good for me. Naming stuff gives me the chance of "scattering" the clips on a "virtual" whiteboard so I can sit back and plan my campaign. Re-reading my comments is one way I'm using. I've even edited a piece against a piece of music WHILE it was playing - using the AB option.

Ho! Anything that makes this easier for me has got my vote.

Who elected videobear king of the forum that he gets to decide who is making uncalled for comments? I tell it like it is. If some thin-skined types can't handle the truth, I guess I'm wasting my time here trying to help.

Or you can just print out an EDL of your project then it will give the clip name and the length and then you can keep a record of it that way.

Nobody "elected" me king of the forum, my Boy...I just got tired of YOUR know-it-all attitude and called you on it. Useful advice is one thing; telling someone they don't know how to edit is another. Keep the one, lose the other, and this Bear will be peaceful and happy.

BB, videobear, jetdv.

Thanks for your comments, and answers to my question. When you say I need to learn how to edit, then yes you are right, which is why I posted here.

Hopefully in a few months time I will be able to say I do know how to edit better than I do now and I can decide if the list approach was the best one to try or not.

Only time will tell, I am sure we did not all start out as experts :-)
