NB5 to NB7 Ultimate

Den24601 wrote on 8/6/2021, 12:31 PM

I recently upgraded from VP15 Suite, which included NB5, to VP18 Edit and purchased the standalone version of NB7 Ultimate Titler. I'm trying to work on a project started in VP15 suite with titles created with NB5, and it's not working well. For example, I've tried saving individual titles in a new folder, but often get a 'couldn't write to [directory location] Please ensure the target location is writable and try again.' Sometimes, I am able to save to the same directory with no problem. The 'saving' problem seems random. I read on a Avid forum that saving old titles to a new directory is a workaround, but it's not working for me.

In short, should I be able to work with NB5 titles using NB7? Should NB7 work as well within VP18 as it did in VP15? I also noticed NB7 is very sluggish and often locks up Vegas. Both VP18 and NB7 were just installed today on a new laptop (Dell Vostro7500) and my W10 PRO is fully current. I copied the Vegas project from a different PC with VP15 Suite installed.

Is NB7 compatible with NB5 titles? Also, I noticed that when I am able to modify an existing NB5 title and save it, upon opening it again, a random, different title opens in its place. Is there a NB7 cache someplace that must be cleared? I never had any problems with NB5; NB7 acts like very different product.

I tried posting this question to the NB Help forum, but they're not presently taking questions (unable to post). I did email their support group, and noted the problem with submitting questions.

Other than NewBlue Titler, I found no major problems using this VP15 project with VP18. In short, is New Blue 7 Ultimate Titler compatible with the NB5 version packaged with VP15 Suite.

Thanks,

Dennis

@Den24601 - I truly feel your pain. I've been with NB Titler since the beginning. I spent much time as a BETA tester with it. Features that blew any VP Texter out of the game. But now, IMHO and experience NBTP7 has both lost the plot and, as you've found, lost the ability to give support. The only contact I get is through their autobot Update Manager, which recently informed me I'd got an update for NPTP7. I did it and installed the Update. And still, there are issues with it. Not able to view the Video inside of the Workspace in VP; Transport controls are a bust; the folder cascade is bizarre and the actual Project saving and update options are maddening.

So, your quest to confirm that NBTP5 projects to work in NBTP7, IMHO, is gonna be a reach.

Yes, Titler Pro 5 titles should open fine in Titler Pro 7. If you have specific tech support questions, you can sent them to support @ newblueinc.com and they will certainly be answered. Please include as many details as possible.

Thanks, Grazie. I deleted the more complex, annimated titles and recreated, as I just couldn't save them. Simple titles weren't a big problem. NB7 looks very much like NB5, but saving titles and caching are quite different, at least for me. I don't actually see a huge difference between NB7 Ultimate and NB5, but I do like the resulting titles. I also still use the legacy VP Pro and different versions of BluffTitler, but prefer NB. Are there any other title programs you'd recommend?

@Den24601 - Yes, do what Edward suggests and then please get back here with your "successful" results - I'm all ears!

Yes, that was a very annoying (to say the least) problem with TP5. The problem seemed to be resolved with TP6, and all the titles that I created in TP6 and now use in the same long existing VP18 project now using TP7 thankfully haven't experienced that problem.

I think that the 'replaced' titles and even disappearing titles started with TP5 when a global approach was introduced. This meant that you could have a series of TP5 titles on a project and globally change the font and other settings for all of them without having to go through them on-by-one to make the changes. An absolutely great approach which had an unfortunate side effect even if the global checkboxes within TP5 were turned off.

Nonetheless, over some 10 years, the support requests that I've sent to NewBlueFX have not only been addressed swiftly but with thoroughness - so many thanks to Edward and Caleb.

@Dexcon - Yes, and over 10 years also thanks to Caleb and Edward, sure, been the same for me. But now I have had outstanding issues with NBTP7 that go back months, that have not been addressed. Have you tried recently? I really wish it wasn’t.

Have you tried recently?

@Grazie  ... Yes. Going back to a post on this forum a little while ago - maybe 2 months ago - re Titler Pro 7 which included the infernal problem of not getting real-time VP preview window reaction/updating/lag with adjustments in TP7 (which was not a problem in TP5 and earlier), I was requested by NBFX support at the time by email to supply further information and, a few weeks ago, was updated by NBFX support that the issue was still being investigated. To be fair, I haven't as yet tried out the just released TP 7.8 build.

@Dexcon - No change:

1 - No Video in Background while Playing in NB GUI.

2 - Transport Controls are less than helpful.

3 - Folder cascade are still unworkable.

4 - Updates to Assets remains my biggest gripes.

These 4 are still outstanding.

@Dexcon - Woah, I’ve got several opinions 😉. Look at their Core Business now, I don’t believe they’ve got enough deep pockets to employ enough creatives and creative coders to put it right. The recent releases, from NBTP6 onwards have supplied bells and whistles but the core Videographer’s requirements have lost out. Live overlays for Live shows ain’t a videographer’s first call.

I’m hoping for the best with NB, but in the meantime I’ve learnt BORIS Title Studio. At least with this I see my Video in the Background and can save and collate Templates easily. The Transport controls are what you’d expect from a Media Manipulation Company.

Jack S wrote on 8/7/2021, 10:03 AM

@Grazie I'm curious. Does BORIS Title Studio support multi-title management similar to TP7. For me, that's the biggest incentive for remaining with TP7, despite all its flaws.

As to displaying the video in the background, TP7 can do this. You just have to apply the title as an event FX then select the option 'View/Background/Video from NLE' in TP7.

@Jack S - No you can’t, even if you apply it as an Event Fx AND “View/Background/Video from NLE' in TP7”. What you’re showing is a display a single Frame from the Video, not the rolling Video, and this is how it used to be. As soon as you Go Play the Screen goes black. It’s a bug. It’s been replicated by those at NB and they haven’t cured it.

@Jack S - You're correct on both counts! It’s been like this, well since 7, yes? What iteration was it working in your Video?

I don’t say these things lightly, as NBTP was totally fab, with the easy update of various Lower thirds for Personnel Names and Job Functions. Total bliss. But now it’s a motzah pudding of ill-planned disconfabulations amassed in a really nice looking GUI.

Jack S wrote on 8/7/2021, 11:12 AM

@Grazie I don't think it matters which build I was on when I recorded this video. As I said in that post, I don't know how I got it to work then as it had not previously worked before. As I've discovered now, it's a bit 'hit and miss'.

Just to remind you what you commented in a post on 7th January 2021 :-

I’ve had a direct response from Seth at NewBlue:

1] The substantive Preview Playback issue has been reproduced by them too.

2] The substantive Preview Playback issue has been now been passed to developers to investigate.

3] Due to their current staffing and ticket load they aren’t able to keep up with the Forums which is something they would like to engage with more in the future.

So they've known about this issue since then. What more can I say? We've said it all before, haven't we?

Ok, here's the scoop on video on background. If applied as an EFFECT, it will work. Vegas passes each video frame to an effect so it can be processed so Titler can see the background video when used as an effect.

When used as a Media Generator, it will not work. This is because the background video is not passed to a media generator. So Titler does not receive anything from Vegas to display.

Titler can only show what Vegas sends it to show. As a media generator, that is nothing. As an effect, that is each frame of the video to which it was applied.

I do what I can to monitor the forums but am not on line all the time. I do pass some posts on and answer others. Unfortunately, I don't have all the answers which is why I point out some posts to others at NewBlue. Honestly, the best way to get support is to open a new ticket. I can't guarantee an immediate resolution to all issues but, at least, the issues will be known.

The issues are already known and have been for a long time, as my previous comment points out. It's got so bad that the NewBlue user forum has been closed down. I think that the amount of unanswered and unsolved problems raised by users must have been an embarrassment.

I've been in contact with several members of the NewBlue team over the years, raising issues that I found. The majority of those issues are still apparent despite the many new builds over that period. There's no wonder that @Grazie has resorted to abandoning TP7 for an earlier version.

Ok, here's the scoop on video on background. If applied as an EFFECT, it will work.

@jetdv - As being Played as a Background in the NBTP7 GUI? Well, no, no it doesn't. Whilst being Played we all get a BLACK Screen. Only on PAUSE do we then see just a single Frame, a still Frame - NOT a Video being Played. This has been the issue for at least EIGHT Months. I wrote to NewBlue with my findings. And "Seth" responded and it's been registered as NOT working by NewBlue. Why don't you?. What you are saying is this is how it SHOULD work, in the NBTP7 Workspace, but it doesn't. Added as an EFFECT there is no Video being played in the Background. Go see for yourself.

Vegas passes each video frame to an effect so it can be processed so Titler can see the background video when used as an effect.

@jetdv - I believe you are confusing Video in Background within the NBTP7 Workspace, with the final outcome back on the VegasPro TImeline, as revealing Video in Background. There are at least four people here who understand this plus the NB team who've registered this as a Bug, why not you?

When used as a Media Generator, it will not work. This is because the background video is not passed to a media generator. So Titler does not receive anything from Vegas to display.

@jetdv - Come on Edward, we know all this, and again I strongly believe you are confusing the core of our complaint and reason for reporting. NewBlue Team has registered this as a Bug. You are saying how it should work doesn't make it happen.

Titler can only show what Vegas sends it to show. As a media generator, that is nothing. As an effect, that is each frame of the video to which it was applied.

@jetdv - Again, you are saying how it SHOULD work, that's laudable, but guess what, it doesn't show up as a Video being played in the Background WITHIN the NBTP7 workspace. I've got to ask, have you so far tried what we are saying, by using NBTP7 to demonstrate to yourself what you are saying? There's @Jack S who'd believed what you are saying but has only now seen, with his own eyes that it does not work.

@jetdv - For this, I both understand and thank you. However Edward, please, please try out what we are experiencing, otherwise repeating the same response makes me think you haven't registered what we and the NewBlue Team have registered as a Bug. I have not been given by NB Team/Support a recent update as to a repair timeline, going forward, so maybe that is something you could do on our behalf?

So I've now reinstalled NBTP5 and now I get Video in Background being played in the NBTP5 Background; I get sensible Transport Controls; Folders that make logical sense and a Timeline that makes sense as well.
