Need Help. About to spend a lot of money, but Vegas may be all that I need.

Cakeman wrote on 12/29/1999, 12:24 PM
Guys,
I have been doing this PC based stuff for a while. I have
even completed a commercial CD. I am about to upgrade my
studio and I wanted to get some advise from experienced
users in reference to what I should purchase and what type
of config. should I go with. I will list me current setup
below and afterwards I will tell what I am about to
purchase. But after playing with the Vegas Demo, I am thinking
that I may not need the new equipment. Please Help

Current Config.
1. Beefy computer, Scsi and all
2. Cakewalk 8.0 ( I have 9 but have not installed it yet)
3. Soundforge 45
4. Waves NPP3
5. External effects. Quadraverb, etc.
6. Gina card
7. Awe 64 Gold
8. Seers Systems Surreal Softsynth
9. Etc .Etc

Now. I do all of my tracks in Cakewalk. Midi Audio and all.
I use SF 45 to add effects, etc.

What I wanted to do is purchase a MOTU 2048 and convert all
midi tracks to audio in Cakewalk, then assign each new audio
track (within cakewalk) a digital output on the Motu, which
would run via lightpipe to the new Tascam TD-M4000 32channel
digital mixer. This mixer is good because of the somewhat
conventional faders, etc. and the fact that I would stay
digital. I like the Vegas but I do not see any Automation
features. It seems to handle the waves fine and I was
thinking about using Vegas to skip the Cakewalk midi to
Audio conversions and go right to vegas from Cakewalk. Once in Vegas
then assign the Motu the digital channels that I wanted to go out
to the Digital tascam. Shwwwww!! Do you guys get where I
am going with this. Do you think that Vegas is good enough
and Professional enough to bypass the Motu 2048 and the
Tascam TD-M4000 all together.

Please Help
I am really about to bt this stuff.

Hi Corey
We use Vegas with a Mackie Digital 8 buss and the MOTU-2408,We also
use Cakewalk Pro Audio 8.04,but ONLY for midi seq. After we have the
midi stuff the way we want we track everything to Vegas from Cakewalk
that way you don't have to worry about running two programs at the
same time. Yes our computer will do it. But we've found that you can
get a fatter sound from your tone moduals or key's if you track them
in patch mode instead of mulit-mode, because all of your keyboards
OSC's are dedicated to that one patch, instead of splitting all of
your voices up. In Vegas you don't have to go into Sound Forge to add
FX you can run them realtime. so if you don't like the FX you can go
back and adjust the level of the FX.I don't know too much about the
mixer you are using but the D8B we are using we do run 3ea.light pipe
but we change things as we go.I use the envelops in Vegas instead of
the Mackie's. I like keeping everthing in Vegas. This is only the way
I do some of the sessions. We have 3 other tech's who all will tell
you they can't do with out Vegas, and they all have different ways of
doing things. I love using Vegas,we dumped so much stuff off of all 3
systems, We've bought it all,Logic Platinum 4.0,Cubase VST/24 Pro
Tools Mix+ bla, bla, bla, bla. Please don't get me wrong im not bashing
any of these products but if you want to get your ideas down VERY
FAST and not have to worry about routing track to out-puts and
monitoring out-puts,I love Vegas because its very easy to use I get
large projects done ahead of time and we don't have any down time as
with some of the other systems we've used.
I hope this helps

Well said, George. We too tried everything from CuBase to Logic to
renting PT over the past few years prior to Vegas. We've been using
VP in a production facility since it was in beta and find it
versatile, stable, intuitive and one hell of work horse. It paid for
itself in record time and has kept the cash register chinging along.

Yes this does help george!!! I have been checking this site for a
while now waiting for someone like you to post me a reply. I have
been holding these funds to purchase the equipment, but I was not
going to buy another piece of equipment until someone who is non bias
gives me the scoop.

Now I WILL place the purchase for the 2408 / Vegas / Digital Tascam
mixer configuration. It seems as if you are a professional user and
if possible I would like to exchange emails with you every now and
then. By the Way, Nice Board your using. I want that Mackie
digital myself.

Thanks
Corey
