Need help "printing to tape"

Hey! I wanted to back up some of my video but I can't seen to get the "print to tape" option to work. This is what I'm doing, tell me if you see anything wrong:

I'm in Vegas and I go to "tools" then "print video to DV tape". After that it prerenders some of the video. Then a countdown pops up and tells me to press record on my device. I press record in "playback mode" and the video that I want to backup displays on my camera but does not record. If I press record in "record mode" then a message box pops up and reads "An error occurred while creating the media file.Error 0x8007001f(message missing)"

What am I doing wrong? Help would be greatly appreciated right now. Thanks!

Ace

Assuming you're connected via firewire to a miniDV camcorder, you shouldn't have to do anything (like pressing record) as Vegas will start the recording for you.

The "device setup" box that pops up is set on manual because vegas won't let me select the other option.

Make sure your tape is not RECORD locked out.

Hmmm .. many years since I've done this, but . . I seem to remember that my XM2 camera HAD to be in Play mode - meaning it HAD to be as-if it was a VCR - NOT Record!! If it was in Record then it would be taking images from the lens - yeah? See? The other thing I have to do is to use the Remote Control and use the buttons on that to THEN record.

Try using the camera in PLAY-back or whatever your camera has to do to PLAY a tape back. I know, sounds odd, it did for me, but it did work. PLUS in this "mode" I get Deice Control back in Vegas PTT.

Years ago Fred Westheimer [Dr Ruth's hubby] called me about his camcorder not working anymore. Turned out that the tape had been run to the end, he didn't think of popping a different tape in, and that particular camcorder had no real notification of "tape full." That taught me a real lesson and confirmed Occam's Razor principle [The simplest explanation is probably the correct one], and as some later-day wag opined "if you hear hoofbeats, don't think zebras."

I found the problem! The camera has to be on and the firewire has to be plugged in before the project is opened.

Also, what is the difference if I "print back to tape" using vegas or if I "print back to tape" using the sony video capture tool? Is one better than the other?

Thanks,
Ace

With the capture tool you have to have a finished DV .AVI file that matches the proper spec or VidCap won't touch it.

Vegas will render as much as necessary to get the proper format first, then print.
