Need help w/ magnifying glass effect...

You have seen it a thousand times, but as an exercise, I wanted to create the magnifying glass over type effect.

1) Created magnifying glass with matte for whole device.
2) Created matte for glass area only.
3) 1st video track type, black over white.
4) 2nd video track, whole device keyed over 1st track. No transparent glass yet.
5) 3rd video track, type b over w enlarged using track motion.
6) 4th video track matte for glass.
7) Made 3rd and 4th track parent child. This allows me to see the enlarged type in the glass area, and the other tracks with whole device and normal type.
8) Moved glass and device in matching moves across type. Looks great except, in tracks 3 and 4 which are parent/child, the type moves with the glass, so you see the same letters through the whole move. How do I keep the enlarged type to give the effect of the glass moving over the type and still see the other tracks.

Thanks for any advice or help.

edit: I think I found my error. I am using the Track motion, instead I should be using the CROP/Position for the motion. If you have other ideas though, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the good ideas. I will play with the cookie cutter alternative.

I actually went to the trouble to creat a Spyglass type graphic in Photoshop complete with a blue transparent lens and a small highlight for a reflection and a nice wooden handle. It looked great. I then created two graphics, one with an alpha channel cutting the whole device out. And one alpha channel for the glass only. I used the shadow for dimension during the spyglass move. I didn't think of using Spherize to distort a bit, so that might be fun to play with also. This was a good exercise to learn using the compositing features of VV.

Dude,

That sounds great. Let us see your work. Post it somewhere. If you don't have a site, email me and I'll put it on my site for a while.

I'd also like to see a screen shot of the project to get a better idea of how it looks (picture will add 1000 words to you description of steps.).

Thanks,
matt
