Need Help With Rendering

struzz88 wrote on 4/16/2007, 9:23 AM
I'm trying to render my 2nd project to dvd. It's only 14 minutes long.
I select Make a Movie then Burn to DVD. The rendering process runs for about half an hour then hangs at about 62%. I then have to cancel it and retry. I've tried about 10 times but I can't get it to work.

I have Vegas Movie Studio 6.0 on a Windows XP pc.

Does anyone have any suggestions that might help me ?
It's kind of urgent. I spent the last 5 weeks making this for my daughter's sweet 16 party this weekend.

Please help.

Thank you.

What are your system specs?

It may be hanging up on a picture that the resolution is too high.

Just a thought.

I don't think it's due to one picture. All of the pictures are about the same resolution.

I'm at work so I don't have all my pc specs in front of me.
It's a farily new HP pc (1 yr old) with plenty of disk space.
The whole project is less than 14 minutes long.

What Make Movie settings are you using?

To be sure we understand your process... 1) you're rendering your project using Make Movie to a file, correct. If so, hopefully you're creating it as an AVI file. 2) Then you're using your file in DVD Architect Stuido to burn to disc.

If so, where is it hanging? In DVDAS?

I am trying to render a Veas Movie Software project .VF file.
The size of the .VF file is only 282 KB but it has about 100 photos and 4 songs in it. I click on 'Make Movie' from the menu and then select 'Burn it to DVD' then select next. A bar pops up showing how much has been rendered. But it never finishes. It stops at 62%.
It never gets to DVD Architect.

I also tried selecting File-> Render As-> then selected save as AVI and MPG. Neither worked.

My 1st project worked successfully a few months ago but was about 2/3 of the size of this project.
My project is only 14 minutes in length. I'm sure you could make dvd for over an hour let alone 14 minutes.

Is there any size limitations that are set up as default values when you start a project ?

I think somewhere my project is being limited by size somehow.
I tried taking about 1/4 of my project and created a new project .
It successfully rendered. But when I try to render the full project the rendering just hangs.

My pc has Windows XP, Pentium 4 CPU, 3.00 GHZ, 1 GB of RAM and over 110 GB of disk space.

You say you took 1/4 of the project and created a new one that had no problems, but which 1/4?

Try taking the last 1/2 of the project - or just remove the photos that do render ok, and see if you still stop at 62% - if you do, that eliminates the possibility of something being corrupt on the timeline, and suggests that possibly your photo's may be too high resolution for VMS to correctly handle.

What resolution are your photos? You should be able to right-click on one in the timeline and bring up the properties.

ScottW,

I took the first 1/4 of the project.

I'm at work now but I'm pretty sure they are high resolution.
What resolution should they be ?

Thanks Scott.
I'll bet that's the problem.
About half my pictures were from my digital camera which I have set at the highest resolution. They other half I scanned in at a high resolution as well, 600dpi.

The problem is how do I change the resolution of over 100 pictures fairly quickly ?

I have all the pictures in one folder.
I use Photo Impact Pro to scan in and alter my photos.

Could I change thge resolution in VMS ?

Go to Microsoft.com, search for "powertoys image resizer", download and install the software. From Windows Explorer select the images you want to resize, right click, select "Resize Pictures", go from there. In an instant all selected images will be resized.

Oh, and then send a support request to Sony complaining that you had to go thru these gyrations to avoid their bug.

Wow !

That's perfect.
Thanks Paul.

Another satisfied customer. Good job Paul.

See.... knowing the contents of a project makes all the difference in figuring out what the problem might be and recommending a resolution.

Thanks MSmart for all your help.
I'm going to resize all the pictures tonight and hopefully that will fix the rendering problem.
I'm hoping that was the problem.

I checked Sony's website for VMS 6.0 Release Notes:

Notable Fixes/Changes in Version 6.0c:
A video rendering issue that occurred when using many high- resolution still images of different sizes has been fixed.

Do you know if they have a patch I can apply to my version 6.0b that might fix the problem ?

That kit is for "Vegas", not "Vegas Movie Studio". It just may be the fix you need, but as far as I know the fix isn't available for Movie Studio customers. It sure would be nice to have clarification on that from Sony (hint, hint...).

Paul & MSmart,

I resized all the pictures and then rendered it. This time it worked !
That was the problem.

Thanks guys !

Resizing with the PowerToy is a great tip!

Be aware, however, that the resizer does a proportional resize even if you enter "custom" settings. You should check your results since you might end up with pictures of the correct width (655) but too high. This will vary depending on what you are starting with.

For instance, a jpg of 800 x 600 will resize to 655 x 491

Since resizing fixed your problem, this will not help. But, maybe it will in the future. I have experienced a similar problem while creating a slide show. In my case, the render would stop at 72% and crash the PC.

I watched the CPU usage steadily climb during the render. I have dual processors. As soon as both processors hit 100% for a few seconds, the PC would crash. This just happened to occur when VMS reached 72% of its render.

I noticed that the PC seemed to be very hot just before and after a crash, so I tried a software program called “CpuIdle Extreme,” which is supposed to make the CPU chip(s) run cooler. I did not expect this to fix the 72% problem, but it did. My render now completes every time. CpuIdle slows the process down a little, but since it allows me to complete the project, I do not care.

It might be worth a try.
