need mask help!

Hi Vegas heads,

I'm new to Vegas, and love it so far.

I'm stuck on an issue tonight: I have a layer of text that is transparent, and under it a background design I made in the program. All I can get it to show of the background (on track 2, track 1 contains the text) is a small box in the upper left hand corner. Does this have to do with the "parent/child" track thing I don't yet totally understand? How do I shut off the mask? I've right clicked a few icons on the track and it changes but can't get the full screen of the background. I don't need a mask here (I don't think anyway) so how do I turn what looks like a mask off?

Thanks for your help in advance!

You might want to try:
http://www.vasst.com/resource.aspx?id=0136efd8-c125-4388-b63a-4108bb1bde6c as it has a tutorial on masking
I'm not clear on exactly what you're trying to accomplish.
If you have track 2 as a child to track 1, then whatever is in track one will reveal what's in track 2, IF you have track 1 in mask/multiply mode.

You're trying to hide the background so only the text shows? Or trying to make the background go inside the text?
To turn off the mask, just simply mute track 1 where the mask/background is. Make sense? You have a mute button on the track header. Or, put your cursor at the top of the event containing the "mask" and your cursor will change to a hand/finger. Click/Drag this downwards, and reduce the opacity of the mask event.

Thanks for your response! Actually, it's more simple than that. Please go to
http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=showMyPhoto&albumID=332553561&photoID=332554000&security=AvtgAh
and you'll see in the preview monitor what the problem is. It's only showing part of the video on track 2 under the transparant text on track 1. I'm very new to Vegas, so it's probably something really basic. Thanks for your efforts!

Can't view your image using the link you provided. Apparently, you have to be logged in as a member to "web shots" view your images using the link in your message.

Much better.
Looks like you've got track motion happening in Track 2, and it's resizing your image to just the upper corner. In track 2, open the Track Motion, and right click inside the window, and choose "Restore. That'll put it to full size.
Since you're asking about masking, were you trying to put the media in Track 2 into the letters found on track 1?

That's great! Thank you! I thought it was something like that and what messed me up was the fact that in Vegas that "track motion" affects the entire track. I'm used to that effect just affecting the clip, or event. So after I made that full screen I had to make a new video track, which is no problem when they are infinite! Then it worked fine: thanks so much!

I wasn't really trying to get the media into the text, but I'd be interested in doing that too.

I might need a pointer on rendering, as well, as I rendered the project but it wouldn't play right, but I may have messed up something in the project after all the adjusting I did trying to fix what you solved.

I really appreciate the assistance!

Glad it helped.
To put the image inside the letters...
Press the Child button in the track header of track 2.
In track 1, open the compositing mode button. (small green button)
and select "Mask/Multiply" in the options there.
That's all there is to it.
Now, anything you make track 1 do, track 2 will slave to. So, if you fade track 1 in, or apply FX to it, track 2 will take on those properties in the Preview window.

I'll give that a try, too. I got the project to work and look the way I wanted and got it to render right too! : )

Thanks for your help!
