Windows Media 9 tools are free. TMPGenc 2.5 does free mpeg-1 encoding. You can also use the Divx encoder, or other free AVI codec's.

Windows Media will play on any mac/PC (windows MP9) no problem, and mpeg-1 should play on any system in existance (PC, Mac, Linux, Sun, SGI, etc).

You have to have Quicktime loaded before you can convert. And I think you have to have the full PRO version.

If you're looking for the easiest tool to do this, do a search at download.com, maybe there's something good there.

For TMPgenc, do a search with Google.
