Need some tweak advise

Trying to optimize a Dell 1ghz PIII w/ 512MB ram & 2 7200rpm drives to play OFF THE TIMELINE into an external NTSC monitor (using the Dazzle Hollywood DV bridge instead of my Sony camera). I've got all but the bare minimum applications running...I would think this beefy processor would handle straight playback (not including transitions/efx) without lots 'o dropped frames...NOT! Are there any Veags or WINDOWS (ME) settings that will optimize EXTERNAL MONITOR performance (increasing cache size in Vegas just smooths out realtime monitoring on the COMPUTER MONITOR, not an external one).
Maybe also driver updates on my Dell OEM Texas instruments OHCI IEEE 1394 PCI card(can't find any!)?????

Or a firmware update on the Dazzle DV bridge????(Again, can't find that anywhere)

Anyone have any experinece w/ this???

Help me out befor I switch to Mac & Final cut!!

Thanks
