nested veg file opens in wrong version

Dale7 wrote on 12/12/2010, 1:10 PM
I'm doing a project in vegas 9.0e using 9-10 nested veg files that were created in 9.0e.
When I right-click on a nested file on the timeline & select "edit in vegas," what happens is vegas 8.0c (which is also installed on this machine) opens, along with an error message that says "an error occurred while loading the project file xxx.veg. The file is an unsupported format." I understand that Vegas 8 can't open the file because it is a vegas 9 file.., but why do the nested files always try to open in vegas 8 rather than in vegas 9?

I've tried to fix it in Control Panel > Default programs but that didn't help.
Using Vista Home Premium. Also have vegas 7 on this machine. I've done alot of projects in vegas 8 using nested files and never ran into this problem before.

Any clues as to what's happening here?

Your .veg files are 'associated' with Vegas 8.

When you install a newer version of Vegas, opening a project in THAT version you are asked if you want to associate the .veg files with the NEW version. If you say no, if will always open with the older version.

Yep, it seems to me that I probably answered "no" to the file association question when I first installed version 9.
But the strange thing is, I have veg files that were created in versions all the way back to Vegas 4, and they all open in Vegas 9. The only files that don't open in Vegas 9 are the nested veg files.

Just tested this with V10 (NEW version).

Imported an existing V10 project into a new V10 project and then clicked 'edit in Vegas'. It opened up v9 and of course, the error, as I expected.

When you open a V4 or V5 ... clip in V9 how do you open it? Double click of the project SHOULD open it in the default program association. Older projects WILL open in 9.

Not sure I follow you here...

I just double-clicked on a vegas file which was last modified in 2003 (prob. created in V4), and it opened up V9...if I place the same veg file on a V9 timeline, right-click and select "edit in vegas," it brings up V8.

I guess that's what I was asking.

Since Dbl-click opens in V9, your default association is obviously V9. Why it would open in V8 when you want to edit a nested v9 project, I am not sure.

I have a feeling it's a bug in V9. Looking at the on-line help, it says to edit a referenced project, the same or later version of Vegas must be installed.

Since V10 is out, not sure if reporting this to SONY would be of much use.

Thanks Tom. I agree, probably a bug in V9.

When I right click on a veg file in V9 and choose "edit file in Vegas" it tries to open the veg file in V8. I have changed my computer file associations settings so that all V8 veg files are to be opened with V9. I have checked that if I double-click on a V8 veg file that V9 does in fact open as it should.

So, what's the deal in V9? Is this a bug in V9? To tell you the truth I just started getting into veg files and so far Iike them but I gotta be able to edit them inside Vegas.

Erik,
It might be.

I just created a new project and imported a V9 project .veg.

File associations are set to open .veg in V10 and it did open in 10.0d when I right clicked on the .veg and chose "Edit in Vegas".

Double click of the imported (nested) .veg files outside of Vegas opened in 10.0d as well.

So 10.0d is working just as i would expect.

Please...can someone verify if their Vegas 9e 32 bit version will open (right click, "edit in Vegas") a veg file nested in a V9 project ? I want to see if this command launches V9 and not V8 to edit the nested veg file. Of course, to test this, you must also have V8 installed on your same system. This is an annoying bug, or at least I am assuming that this is a bug. Thanks very much.

Erik, I have Pro 8.0c, 9.0e and 10.0d on my system (XP Pro, 32-bit).
When I tried your request, it opened up in Pro 10 for me.

Thanks Mike for the feedback. So you were in V9 and tried to edit a nested veg and it opened V10. Can I then presume that you V10 set in Windows as the default association for all .veg files?

Correct.

I haven't changed the file association since installing Pro 8 but Vegas seems to have a mind of its own :(
I even right-clicked the Pro 9 veg file, set it to "open in Pro 9 only" and it still opened in Pro 10.
