Network Storage

Hi,

Do you guys import media into your project directly from network storage, or do you copy from storage to local drive first?

I have several PC's and some media, intros / outros etc. I use for many different projects, and I would like to keep them in one place to use on all my PC's.
To do this I have ordered a 'ready NAS' from Netgear. All my PC's are running gigabit.
What would you advise me to. Import directly from the NAS or to copy to local drive at first.

Thanks.

If your network connection is faster than the bitrate of the media then using it directly from the NAS is fine. In most cases 100Mbps is more than adequate for video as this allows 3 streams of DV or HD to run simultaneously.

If your network connection is slower than the media bitrate then you're using 10Mbps and you need to upgrade your network anyway! But, that's not the case for you, so don't worry about it.

Thanks, Kelly - I'll just try it out when I get my NAS

I have had a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ since October last year and have been extremely happy with it. I use it for archiving photos and video as well as I've ripped most of my CD's to it and am using Sonos media players to stream the music to various stereo systems I have.

When I archive video, I often read directly from it when editing in Vegas, using a Gigabit Ethernet connection with no problems.

Thanks psg, nice to know - look forward to test it myself :-)
