The new BDP-S350 ships this summer for about $400 and BDP-S550 will be available this fall for about $500.

Either they give the consumer what they want or they go by the wayside.
i don't know why they don't offer a $150-200 non 'net enabled player. As long as I can watch the movies I buy & look at the special features, i don't care about using the internet or updates.
I got a 40 GB PS3 for $400 from Circuit City a few weeks ago, with the separate DVD-style remote. It plays Blu-ray discs plus it has network connectivity, and it has USB ports and an internal (upgradable) hard drive. I can play my HD video in MPEG2, MP4 or WMV format from DVD-R or external or internal hard drives and/or streaming from my PC. And I've heard it can even play games, if you care about that (I don't have any games for it though).
Not sure why blu-ray standalones would be of interest unless they cost a lot less than a PS3.

Well... at present anyway... the PS3 is a bit weak in the audio department, so if audio is important to you (and it is for me) then these players may be a better bet... and they do look pretty promising.
Until the internet is part of the special features...and that's where this is going.

I did buy a bunch of $99 HD-DVD players at a Wal-Mart "Secret" sale back in November.
The BD players are so expensive right now, it's cheaper to buy a PC BD drive and back up BDs to HD-DVD format. It's working well for me, but some of the special features are not working.
As soon as current tech BD players hit the $150 or less price point, I will make the jump.
I would get one of those game toy stations that play BD, but the kids already have too much TV & computer time (and Im not sure how well they stack in an entertainment center).
