New Blackmagic Cameras

Blackmagic have again got the industry talking with the release of 30 new products at NAB this year. They have released a smaller version of the URSA, the URSA Mini with 4K and 4.6K options, and a new version of the Pocket camera, the Micro Cinema Camera.

The Micro is quite interesting, sort of like a GoPro on Steroids, it only shoots up to 1080p at up to 30 fps, but it has a menu choice of rolling or global shutter, and under rolling shutter you can shoot up to 60 fps. Unlike the GoPro, it takes you choice of MFT lenses. This time round, it has Genlock, so could be used to put together a 3D Stereoscopic system, and it also features radio control servo compatible control inputs, even implementing the Futaba S.Bus control system.

I disagree, the usual cure for moire is to put an optical low pass filter (OLPF) in the camera, and that is as good as sticking a sock over the lens. Blackmagic intentionally avoid this, as it should be a choice of the buyer as to whether they want to hobble the camera or not.

If you want to limit the maximum sharpness of the camera, then simply buy an OLPF and fit it, but don't put one in any camera I buy.
