New Camera/AVCHD workflow

Just received new Canon HF-M301 camera (thanks for advice from all in previous thread)....this is an upgrade from a trusted Sony mini-DV point and shoot.

Any advice re: settings for shooting video (such as interlaced vs. progressive....still confusing after reading many posts), and workflow with AVCHD (importing from camera, dropping to timeline, editing, etc) would be helpful and appreciated

This camera shoots in PF24, PF30, and 60i. If your exporting routine is DVDs, then just shoot in 60i. If you want to make actual scripted movies, use PF24 (however, to do so, you need to remove pulldown in post processing, using Cineform NeoSCENE which costs an extra $130). If you want to shoot official music videos, then shoot in PF30 and slow them down to 24p in post. Here's the project properties you need for each kind: http://eugenia.queru.com/2008/07/16/sony-vegas-project-properties-with-hv2030/ (since your camera is AVCHD you need to change the resolution to 1920x1080 & aspect ratio to 1.0000 manually in the dialog, than what's suggested in the article which was mostly written for HDV 1440x1080).

Open a Windows Explorer window, navigate in the camera's folders, copy the big .mts video files from the camera to a folder in your hard drive, load Vegas, setup the project properties as shown on step #2 in the link below, drag n drop files in the timeline, edit, and then use the rest of the steps to finalize/export for the web: http://eugenia.queru.com/2007/11/09/exporting-with-vegas-for-vimeo-hd/
