Download Quicktime, install the FULL package. That will allow you to open quicktimes.
Regarding the avi files, you must be messing with codecs other than 'standard' such as DivX, Huffyyuv, etc. You'll need to download those. I fyou don't know what codecs you used, download Gspot. You can search for it, or find a link to it on the www.vasst.com/login.htm pages, look at the Plugins page.

As has already been asked, what kind of AVI files are you trying to play in Vegas? If they're movie files from a digital camera, you (usually) can't load them in to Vegas. Audio - yes, video -no. This question has been asked & answed here repeatedly. One example is the I have an AVI that Vegas 5 does not recognize thread.
BTW, you still have all sorts of options with the mpeg1 & 2 encoders. Select the "Custom" button on the lower right side of the "Render As" screen.

grr...
ok! on my old computer... my AVIs worked fine.. yes, they were from a digital camera...
now, on my new computer, same vages, same avis. it doesnt.. kinda odd. ok...

i edited tons of my old avis (the same avis) on vegas...
so, you can understand my frustration...

and i know about mpeg1 and mpeg2 encoder options under render as.. im saying, now when i click it, its dead... its not greyed out.. but it might as well be... i click it and nothing pops up.. it used to.. but not anymore..
damn i hate switching computers!!!!!

Look at the Vegas FAQ pages on the www.vasst.com/login.htm site. There is a HUGE section on codec recognition and links to mjpeg codecs.

Sounds to me like it's time for an uninstall - reinstall.
