New Dell 7770 and Vegas 20 build 411 keeps freezing

Steveooo wrote on 11/22/2023, 5:58 AM

Hallo, thank you for your precious help in finding a solution with Vegas 20 build 411 and the Workstation Dell 7770 12th gen Intel Core i/_12850HX 2.10 Ghz Ram 32 gb Windows 10 and Nvidia RTX A4500. The software freezes a lot when i import a simple 4k file HAVCS in the trimmer. Often Even if i import to the timeline the blue wheel appears and freezes. The Nvidia drivers installed is the version 537.58

Any ideas in how could i solve the issue with this workstation?

Thank you so much

Be sure the Intel UHD Graphics is enabled and use it in preferences/ file io for hardware decoding (should be on by default).

Can you give MediaInfo for your media? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

hallo Roger, it was enabled and i did a test this morning after watching a video on YT that suggested to disable it!

I'll enable again after reading your post.

@Steveooo Hi, that's only a small file so would you share it on a file sharing site like Google Chrome 👍

  1. Open Google, top right is a sq of dots - Open Google Drive.
  2. Drag that video onto the Google Drive window, let it upload.
  3. Right click on the file on screen - Share.
  4. A window will pop up, General Access - choose anyone with the link - Copy link.
  5. Then on here in a new comment at the top there's a chain button, paste the link on there
  6. Click Comment

I noticed that both files coming from the FX3 or the Mavic drone bring Vegas to freeze! At the beginning with the blue wheel that keeps running then a white screen after i decide to quit

BiswasArt wrote on 11/22/2023, 8:10 AM

wow...just looked up the laptop and it is a beast....and like i said in another post, try switching to power mode to high-performance and see if the problem goes away....if it does fix then the issue is the efficiency cores on your cpu....

if it is still not stable then try disabling Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Settings-Display-Graphics-Change default graphics settings-turn it off and restart the laptop. The reason to do that is that since your laptop is extremely capable of playing hevc with the graphics card alone in vegas pro that it doesnt require the help of cpu at all to deliver smooth frames while playing the footage.

Also i can suspect that only you are facing this issue is because you might be in the few people who uses that kind of powerful graphics card and cpu with old version of vegas pro (sorry). I hope this has helped.

Hi @Steveooo from your MediaInfo, High 4:2:2@L5.1 is the hint. 10-bit 4:2:2 AVC doesn't work with GPU decoding, period.

While disabling the iGPU is horrible advice, the file type here means that it's irrelevant. This playback will likely be poor as the CPU has to do everything.

I'd pick a different variety of AVC to use in VEGAS. 10-bit 4:2:0 AVC would be a great choice in VEGAS that your iGPU would have no issue with. My desktop with an Intel UHD770 does great with these files from the A7sIII.

10-bit 4:2:0 HEVC would work okay as well, though the HEVC support in VEGAS is still a work in progress (big improvement with 21.187 but not there yet). 10 bit 4:2:2 HEVC support is still not great in VEGAS with the Intel UHD770 in my testing.

Maybe share MediaInfo for the Mavic as well.

This one is relatively high bitrate 8 bit 4:2:0 AVC.

That would in theory work well though in the past DJI compression has caused fits for the decoders in VEGAS. It should do okay with the UHD 770- how's playback of just the DJI files?

Odd that raw processor is set to off and not the NVIDIA. Is VEGAS finding it properly? I assume it is in preferences/ video.

If none of the above work, use proxies for that file. Right click on the file in your project media bin, "create video proxy", once that process finishes, set preview quality to "preview" and enjoy silky smooth playback.

I'll set to Nvidia and i'm running a couple of tests

RogerS wrote on 11/23/2023, 3:11 AM

If it's auto (off) that says that VEGAS isn't properly finding the GPU (I think). If NVIDIA is now an option that's fine.

Unless you are using raw video (Braw, etc.) this shouldn't matter at all, it's more a symptom that something is wrong. Preferences/video really should be automatically set to the NVIDIA GPU.

@RogerS What should i set in "hardware decoder to use" ?

Steveooo wrote on 11/23/2023, 3:18 AM

This is very strange that "off" is the default. For hardware decoder set it to the Intel GPU.
For raw video it probably doesn't matter- try OpenCL on the NVIDIA.
For GPU acceleration of video processing select the NVIDIA GPU.

(Also, to take a screenshot you can press windows + shift + s and select part or all of the screen. Then save it and upload it).
