New DVD+R won't finish burn 8 of 10

Hello,
I have made literally hundreds of perfect burns using Maxell DVD+R, they come out very very good. Well just recently I decided to switch to "printable" Maxell DVD+R, same brand and format, but just printable. Well now, I get mabye 1 out of 8 burns correcetly, the other bad ones won't complete the burn, they error out.
I updated to dvda 2.0b long ago, is there some type of new update I can load to make these burn correctly? The Maxell people said burner firmware, but I'm thinking Sony isn't recognizing the DVDs properly... I have no clue, and hope someone can help. I really want to start using printable Maxells now. Have tried 2 separate packages of printables(dvd+r) , both have the same bad burn rate.
Thank you for anyone that may be able to help... James

My guess is that the older DVD+R were slower speed. The printable part of the equation probably doesn't mean anything.

The faster speed media don't burn on older burners, although the 108 is pretty modern.

You can check the revision history for firmware for your product, and download the new firmware here:

Do you print before burning?
I did that once and only got costers.
Now I always print after burning with no problems.

Be careful. This may be the same “Re-Brand” but NOT the same “brand”. I had this experience with FujiFilm discs which always worked perfect for me. I bought them in bulk and never had a bad burn. Then I saw the same discs (or so I thought) packaged with slim DVD cases and I consistently got bad discs that would skip in my DVD player! What gives?

Then I found out that the FujiFilm bulk discs were made in Japan and were actually Taiyo Yuden and the FujiFilm boxed discs were made in China and were ProDisc (read: absolute junk!).

I don’t know if Maxell manufactures their own discs but be very, very weary of discs that are re-branded. They may be sourced from any number of different manufacturers. Be sure of what you are getting.

I would download the Nero CD-DVD Speed tool which, among other things, will tell you the manufacturer code of the actual disc (regardless of who re-brands it). See if the Maxell discs you bought are really the same disc as the ones you had. (then let us know) ;-)

"Rebranding" is something that all the major manufacturers seem to be doing these days. Not just with discs, but with burners as well. I just replaced a "Sony" DVD+-R burner that was actually a rebranded "Lite-on" burner. Among other problems, it didn't work properly with DVD Architect.

I'm also having trouble with a bunch of Verbatim discs that I bought from Sam's club. The last I checked, Verbatim was right up there with Taiyo Yuden and Maxells for quality, but these ones must have been made by someone else.
