New Feature Suggestions

I posted this a while back, during NAB. I figured I'd post
again, now that everyone's back in the office, to see if SF
Techs could respond to these questions and suggestions:

As a new Vegas user, I'm excited to say that this
inexpensive package is intuitive, relatively stable, and
well-designed...Even in comparison to the "high-dollar"
workstations I use at my day job. Congrats on a beautiful
start. I'd expect nothing less from Sonic Foundry.

I have a few new feature suggestions that immediately come
to mind:

1) Stereo widening/narrowing track AND bus plug-in...I have
XFX 1, 2, and 3 and do not find this function. In my
experience, having the ability to adjust stereo spread and
relative mono presence is exceedingly useful in mixing.
Samplitude offers this feature as a main bus adjustment,
BTW.

2) SMPTE/MTC "time stamping" (perhaps as RIFF header info)
of Vegas track wavefiles to allow resync to original record
time on the EDL.

3) An expanded trim window to allow editing, slipping, and
crossfading of 2 EDL entries with edit preview, and write-
back to EDL. I realize that this can be done in the UI, but
on a crowded EDL, it gets difficult to see what's going
on...AND, there's the necessity to constantly zoom in and
out with a heavy pre-roll requirement for buffering while
attempting to preview an edit in progress on large EDL's.

4) Support for ASIO 2 sample accurate sync to MDM's...If
wave drivers won't do it, then move to something that
does...Even if a competitor came up with it. Professionals
need sample accurate sync. My hardware will do it...My
software will not. That's disappointing.

5) The ability to change clip duration and fade when
in "lock" mode. Lock should constrain movement in time, not
editability. Thanks for your consideration of these ideas.
Long live Vegas.

6) Customizable hotkeys for various functions, stored in a
user setup file.

7) Editable autosave intervals with separately
stored "temp" files for crash recovery.

Here are some operational questions:

1) Is there a way to dictate the default track effects that
are automatically included when a track is added? If not,
might I suggest a function for this (i.e. build the channel
strips as a global attribute). At the very least, it would
seem that a "track noise gate" would be better left as a
track effect to be added, instead of as a defualt plug-
in...It seems a useless waste of DSP for a digital editor
(IMHO).

2) Does anyone else experience a SEVERE reduction in
overall stability with Acoustic Mirror inserted as a buss
effect? I crash frequently when using this plug-in (on a
PIII 733 Cu with 256MB of RAM).

3) If a track or buss effect is "bypassed" but still in the
chain, is it still absorbing CPU?

Thanks in advance for answers to my questions and
consideration of these feature additions. Congrats on this
product. I look forward to learning more about it with more
seat time.

Hi David!

I can only answer one of your questions - acoustic mirror is way too
processor intensive to be used as a Track effect in Vegas.

Okay, I'll leave the rest for somebody else.

Thanks!

User assignable HotKeys would be AWESOME!
Please reply to this if you agree!

I'm hoping that Vegas Video 3 provides more sophisticated batch capture capabilities. This, to me, is the big missing feature: to edit, then be ableto recapture later from a batch list.

If Sonic Foundry can provide that, I'll switch over from Premiere 6 completely.
