I'm hoping to find a way to detect the browser font settings through javascript and then adjust accordingly, but I haven't had any luck finding anything yet. If anyone knows of a script that does this, let me know.
Hmmmm. This may seem like a very odd and bizarre suggestion, but ...
Sonic Foundry's website overall has much tinier text than most all other
websites. Why not just let the user's browser choose the font size? Why
bother specifiying it at all? I can understand you wanting to choose a
specific type face and color; but you don't have to specify a font size in
the style sheet.
Most major browsers have a default font size that is quite usable. I
usually reduce this size by one point in my browser just so that i can fit
more on the screen. But in any case, most browsers make it quite easy
for the user to change the size on the fly ... and then remember the
user's preference.
The font setting capability is now live on sonicfoundry.com. Please try changing your setting here, and let me know if you continue to experience problems. Thanks.
The font settings in IE don't work with Cascading Style Sheets when the fonts are set to a fixed size. There are ways to implement CSS with variable fonts, but the implementation is buggy at best, and quite different from browser to browser.
So in order to take advantage of the font controls afforded by CSS, we made the decision to go with the fixed size. The small font size is a design choice for the aesthetic we're trying to achieve.
I'm still hoping to find a way to detect the browser setting and display the fonts accordingly, but for now, if you don't like the font size, please go to "Edit Account" and choose a setting you like. This setting should be remembered on your future visits to sonicfoundry.com
Thanks all for providing this feedback. I’ll keep plugging away at it.
Interesting. I'm using Netscape 4.79 and now it appears that i just have the default times-roman
font for everything except the menu at the top of the page. I'm able to adjust the size to my
liking with Ctrl-[ and Ctrl-] now though. Is this intentional?
Please, move on to the loading all replies in one window option. Even with tiny fonts, I could do a copy and paste into NOTEPAD and resize the fonts quicker than loading individual pages and trying to remember the original post in the meantime. This is a much more desired option that deserves more attention.
Scratch that. The menu is the default times-roman font too. It's just the buttons that
still look the same, and that's because they are graphics instead of text. The entire
page is now the browser default font.
Kevin, while i'm typing here, another thought comes to mind. Would it be asking too
too much to have the textarea for the Body: input be wider? Right now you have it set
to 45 columns. It looks like you could have it be at least 75 and still fit in the page
design. You might also want to look into auto-wrapping.
The only thing that I would like to see added is when you reply to a post its on the same page as the rest. So I could say easily start to write a response and scroll down to remember better what someone said to me [or about me!!!!]or just getting the facts straight. A smiles ledger would be nice but not on the top of my list.
Thanks for improving the forum so quickly, SF: well done.
By the way, I recently tried clicking on "Ignore this User" while reading an annoying post, and it worked like a charm. 78 mostly-hostile posts disappeared from view! I encourage use of this feature, instead of replying to such posts and making the negative strings longer.
