New MAudio

My Firewire Solo just arrived.

I know some of you have used the 410 (it's big brother) so for those of you who know.... When I set this up later this afternoon, should Vegas recognize it right off the bat or am I going to have to dance the dance of the seven veils?

My impression is it should shake hands fairly well with Vegas.

It depends on how you set it up in Windows. If you disable your motherboard sound and make the Firewire Solo the default Windows sound device, then Vegas will have no choice but to use it. If, however, you keep your motherboard sound working too, then just go into the Vegas preferences for Audio and select the ASIO drivers for the Firewire Solo and Vegas will use it. Ether way it will work.

One danger with having the same audio device for Windows and recording software is that if Windows suddenly needs to signal something with a sound, it will change the sampling rate of the device, perhaps in the middle of a recording.

I only made that mistake once, knowing this you can beat me! :O)

Thanks guys

Sounds like I need to go the route JR mentioned and show Vegas the device instead of using the solo as the primary sound card (if I'm reading you guys correctly).

Will let you know what happens......

mmm... been having little issues with firewire device (FW410).
Preview with ext. monitor, for instance, seems to hickup after a while if previews are too long or have too much definition (keep it "preview" or under def.).
BUT, I must say it may be my mobo that doesn't deal quite "tight" enough when I have more than one device (?).
So far, I've tried it with both the on-board VIA 1394 ports AND my ADS Tech PCI DV Basic 1394 card with the same issues.
I bought this card so I can also use it on location to record sounds from a Fostex PD-4 DAT machine.
And now, M-Audio's gonna release the Flash Tracker (probably by the end of June, according to the dealer I make business with), an "iPod-like" device that can record thru 2 TRS 1/4" jacks, a USB2 port and SPDIF jacks. 24/96 too... very promising for field recordists who want some ambiances sounds here and there.
Guess I could toss the PD-4 when I don't need the timecode very soon...

So back to the FireWire 410 ; I still haven't made my mind if I'm really happy or not with this device. And I'm sure waiting for new drivers...

Solo is up and running with only one call to tech support (driver didn't install correctly first time).

Question: Is it possible to have the FW Solo as your primary sound device and be able to hear what you recorded without having to go back and reset the audio device to the default windows sound device. I can record but to hear it play back from the timeline in Vegas, I have to go back into options and set the audio device back to the default (which really sucks....to much clicking around)

Also FUTZ: MAudio just released new drivers for the Solo and the 410 dated March 2005. You mentioned you were waiting on new ones.....

I'll give some kudos to tech support for MAudio - phone rang twice and someone picked right up....

Are you using the ASIO drivers? You should be able to tell Vegas to record and playback through the FW Solo using the ASIO drivers.

yep....I'm using the ASIOs and have selected all of the appropriate boxes for playback but it is silent unless I change it back to the default settings. I can go into the Solo's control panel while it's playing back and I see levels but no sound through Vegas.............

OK, I'm just asking here... just in case.
Is it possible your speakers are still connected to your onboard soundcard?

Actually - just turn off Windows sounds and you should be fine. That's one of the first tweak that you're "supposed" to do in a media-development-oriented PC - shut off system sounds...

I run an M-Audio FW-1884 as the primary device on my second PC (where I also do most of my Vegas renders) and have never had an issue - even after installing the v6 update, which I thought would require reset and tweak, but it's just rolled right with it.
