New PC component suggestions

Rich Parry wrote on 7/17/2022, 8:10 PM

It’s time to replace my 12-year-old dual Xeon PC. I need some advice. For this thread, I’d like to concentrate on CPU, MB, PSU, and Case. I’ll postpone my SSD and RAM decision. For a  GPU I’m learning toward a 3070 card. I picked a CPU with integrated video to give me some time while I’m deciding on a GPU card.

Considerations:

  • Cost is NOT a major issue, $5K to $6K is reasonable
  • Noise is an issue. PC doesn’t have to be silent but would like to limit fan noise. I’m not ready to try water cooling
  • VP Render Speed is NOT an issue, my videos are short, video is a hobby, not a job
  • VP Preview Speed is an issue, I don’t mind making proxies but would like to limit them
  • I shoot in 4K30 and render to 1080P

Major Components (will decide on other components later)

  • Intel i7-12700 with integrated video. From my research, an i9 doesn’t help VP ($340)
  • MSI MB MEG Z690 Unify ($449)
  • Be Quiet Dark Base 900 Full Tower ($279)
  • EVGA SuperNova 750Watt PSU ($200)

What do you think?

@Rich Parry, Intel is suppose to be releasing new CPU's really soon, so I'd wait. They are suppose to be "faster" than the current gen Intel's.

As for cases, since you aren't a "water cooling" person, a really good air cooler would be needed to tame the Intel furnace. Many to choose from. reviews are great. They also are great for computer cases. And since you want a quiet case, make sure you have enough air flow to keep things cool. I don't mind a little fan noise knowing that my internal hardware is being kept cool.

Power supplies... lots out there. Seasonic is a major player too.

Computer hardware at this point in time is really good. I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my hardware, but from "leaked" information on what is coming for AMD and Intel, I'll wait... and am waiting to see what VP20 brings to the table....

While not decrying @Reyfox 's suggestion, please keep in mind a 30+ years old adage about computer technology - if you wait for the next big tech advance, you will be waiting forever - there is always something better coming up on the horizon.

But if you wait just a little bit, once the new CPUs and GPUs are promoted the hardware you are looking at now will drop in price to clear out stocks before they hit.

@RogerS  ... a very good point. The last small frame Dell laptop that I bought some 3 months ago was about 2/3rds the price of the newest edition - and the differences were marginal at best. Other than the new version being an i5-12XXX and the 'sale' version being an i5-11xxxx, the older version had a higher capacity SSD. I've no regrets on this purchase.

@Rich Parry

I have a few parts sitting in my cart that I'll share without editorial comment. I usually build systems when the weather gets cooler and it rains around here since I spend more time inside. Market timing is very problematic these days.

Motherboard

My power supply is adequate for my next build.

Cooler - I have already purchased the water cooler to replace the one that I've run for the last five years. It was on sale for $119 at the time.
