new prob with v 4

mountainman wrote on 3/14/2003, 10:33 PM
Win 2k, dual athlon, 1 gig ram, dvd. No prob with vv3.

When i do a print to tape from timeline, it looks ok. When I play back that ptt section straight from the timeline (not print to tape) the play back is jerky.
Here's the real kicker. If I turn off recompress frames and enlarge the comp monitor
window size to over 320, the external monitor plays just fine. Sofo said to check hardware accel, audio buffer, did all that no difference.
Anyone else see this.

TIA John M.

Hi John,

What quality preview setting are you using when jerky/not jerky?

Had it on best, reset to good, still there but not as bad. Been thinking of puttin in an ads pyro 1394 card thinking this might help?
Thanks for the reply. J

Hi MM,

'Nother thought... is "simulate device aspect active"? Forcing recompression at the event?

Also, Preview-auto is typical for realtime preview-playback.

Run your previews at 'preview/Auto' for best results. Using BEST forces Vegas to examine more frames than you need for previewing, and really only benefits when you've got recompressed media happening anyway. Changing your 1394 card isn't going to help much. However, if your system is sharing resources, this too, could cause issues.
Also, if you leave preview set to Preview/Auto, you'll not need to really worry about the size of the preview screen. This is an issue though, in that sizing the preview screen down smaller than 320 creates a draft mode for the external monitor, and it's pixelated and jerky. Keep it sized at 320 and you'll be fine. Hide the docking window if you need to have more screen space.

I have the same issue. I'm running XP Home, P4-1.5GHz, 512MB RAM. I was asking about this on another list, and no one had the answer. Well there was really only 1 V4 expert there!

I've got a Belkin Firewire card. Preview on my computer monitor is smooth. Actually, in my case, I'm getting an occasional audio drop out as well in the Print to Tape--but you don't hear it in preview mode. But aside from that, I get jittery playback, although successive playbacks seem to improve--like it's being cached.

I've tried the various sync parameters, and changing to Preview Auto, without success.

Sorry I don't have the answer--I'm just letting you know I'm looking for one too!

Thanks all. Spot, is sofo going to change the 320 issue or should I get another monitor? Screen space is an issue.
