I am using the 510 with 1.0a firmware and it works great for me.
Burned both +R and -R 2X media no problems. Have not tried 4X
so don't know how DVD-A will handle the fastest media.

Look for another thread about 4X media and if 1X speed is "more"
compatable.

510A does 4x max on recognised media for most DVD writable types, but 2x for -RW.
510AX seems to be the same thing, a confusion that has no published reasoning.
Sony US advertise the 510A, which links to a description of 510AX saying that it has achieved an award as the 500A model. So to attach that award infers that the 510A model behaves as least as well as the 500A. So compatibility problems could be fired directly at Sony. storagebysony.com - I think Sony incorrectly specify DVD+RW on their own website as being 2.4x for the 510AX.

Sony sonyisstorage.com (Europe etc) doesn't even bother to mention the 510 series, probably because they have some literally in ships that they would rather sell for full price. Resellers do list both 500 and 510 in Europe invariably both in limited or manufacturer JIT stock.

Perhaps some Japanese folks here could clear this up with the facts from Sony engineering personnel instead of these marketing "heroes"? Invariably the website serving the country of origin is more comprehensive and correct.

the above confirms the retailers perspective that the 510A is 4x on all but DVD-RW for which it serves 2x max.

http://www.storagebysony.com/cd-rw/product.asp?id=202
currently incorrectly states that the 510A(X) is 2.4x for DVD+RW, 2x for DVD-RW and 4x for -R and +R.

Perhaps I'd then buy from Pioneer if the original company can't even work out what they are selling outside of their Japanese HQ?

Thank you all for the responses. I think I will put my money down on the 510 rather than the 500.
