Don't see anything in there that you couldn't do in Vegas or PS but when time is money things get a bit different. I'd say the same thing for the Pixelan transitions, I'm pretty certain I could build all of them in Vegas but why would I.

If you want to see what for me is the ultimate piece of expensive kit that does for $5K what can be done for $50 have a look at the P+S Techniks Skater.

All a matter of degree. It is all relative.

I think that is exactly the point. You could reproduce most of these effects manually but it would take time. Clicking a preset and getting there instantly is what you're paying for. It is nice to have them categorized as to their equivalents in the Tiffen, Rosco, Cinegel, and GamColor filter sets. The boxed version will include swatches from those manufacturers. I do think the price of the plug-ins is too high especially since they offer fewer features than the standalone version and cost 3 times as much. I'm still playing with it but may spring for the standalone version.

rique, yes I agree.

One thing, I like to dabble and play with Vegas's abilities to produce a "look". I'm fortunate in as much as the clients that I have had, allow me to do this to the content. I do like saying to the client that I've tailored the "look" for the video.

Maybe when I get real busy then maybe I would go to this? - Eh? Maybe not!!

And yes, it WOULD be the standalone.

I'd like to hear your comments on the Polarizer?

Thanks rique, thanks for experimenting with the "pola". Interesting indeed.

I tried to use it to remove reflections in a glass window and it was useless.

And that's what bothers me a bit about such programs. These are not "filters" in the true sense of the word, nor do they behave like filters. They are "looks".

I think it's a little misleading to use the word "filter" in the product title. But that's just me.

But that's just me.

Nope, no it isn't just you Jay-Man.

I was out yesterday - between RAIN showers....seesshhh .. - I got some leaves on a tree "gaa-linting" away nicely. Glinting away with "blown" white edges. No probs, I twisted my pola - BOSH! Gone! I needed to take a bit of reflect of a stream. Same thing BOSH! Gone! I wanted to blend the Blue Sky to the reds of the tree bark - BOSH! Done! Now THAT'S a Pola!!

Could this other one do it? I suspect not?

Not a prayer really. Some things just cannot be done other than in front of the lens. Recording RAW opens up more options for filters in post but things like pola cannot be emulated, grad NDs, maybe.

BTW, a Look refers to a 3D LUT which is kind of different to what a filter can do. LUTs enable you to shift colors, with care.

Bob? Please be assured that that WAS ironic rhetoric on my part. Or should that be rhetorical irony?

But you DID know that - didn't you?

Yes,
I think when this thread got started I made some comment along the same lines. Their "pola" filter is a fraud!
Kind of surprised that someone with Tiffens reputation would put an FX like that into the package.
I was speaking with a chap a few days ago about another package that does a DOF emulation, basically you build a grey scale mask that the FX uses to control blur. Very convenient although you can sorta do this in Vegas with lots a beziers.
There's some other neato FXs from The Foundary (UK based) that run in AE. Most of their stuff is what you get in Vegas anyway but one that caught my eye was Glass, it really can make the objects in a shot look like they're glass (reflections only), I think it's manipulating the highlights.

I'll just add that most have pointed out what can be done with vegas alone... when I looked at this package it looked like a combination of "looks" and color manipulations and some gobos... if that is so what you are really buying for 599$ is their presets... but to be honest, combine vegas with the latest soon to be releasing version of magic bullet looks(which IS or WILL be compatible with vegas per red giant software) and I believe you have every capability AND you get awesome presets as well... check it out... http://prolost.blogspot.com/2007/04/magic-bullet-looks.html
