New User: Capturing Video - Audio Sync Issue

Hi all,
I'm a new user. Having problems with audio/video sync when capturing. I have searched the forums but can't seem to find an answer. Basically, if I capture one hour of video, the audio will gradually get out of sync to where it's about 1 second out by the end.

Using Vegas Video 5 - latest update
I'm Capturing video via FusionHDTV DVB-t Plus (composite)
Capturing Audio via line-in on onboard sound (Via rca)

One thing I have gathered from reading the forum is that capturing audio via line-ine/soundcard etc can be problematic for sync. The main thing I don't understand is that when watching the live video preview in vegas while capturing is in progress everything is perfectly in sync, though the end product isn't. How can it be in sync on the preview but not on the end product?

Is there a setting within Vegas that can compensate for audio sync on the fly while capturing (eg, adjust audio by 20ms or whatever)?

I'm stuck with my current setup for a while. Is my only option to record in smaller segments so that things don't get too far out of sync?

Thanks

Mick

You really need to capture via firewire instead of whatever analog card you are using. Does your camera have firewire output? If yes, simply add a firewire card to your computer (WELL worth it). If your camera does not have firewire, it would be a little more expensive as you'd also need a convertor.

Since you said you're stuck with your current setup, I'd probably capture in shorter segments as you mentioned. However, you may be able to resync even if the longer segment is captured. Simply hold down the CTRL key and resize the audio or video to match the other. As long as the drift is consistent, this should allow you to get it back in sync.

Hi jetdv,
Thanks for the reply. My motherboard does have onboard firewire, though my camera is a little old and hasn't got a firewire output. What type of converter would I need from non-firewire camera to firerwire?

Thanks again for the help.

Canopus makes several such devices. You'll see a lot of references to their ADVC100, which is a bi-directional converter that will not only give you DV input to your computer via firewire, but will permit you to connect a monitor or TV with a composite video input for use as an external preview device while you're editing in Vegas.

Hi,
Thanks for the help. I've ordered a Canopus ADVC55 as I'm only interested in one-way coversion (external to pc) & will hopefully be picking it up this weekend.

Thanks again.
