New Zoom H4 firmware update v2.10

Yes Max, I'd copied the SYSTEM file outside the SYS folder, on the root directory of the card.

When holding the Input Menu switch south and switching on, the Zoom loads up with the previous 1.30 version, as if nothing had happened.

Once switched on, the Input Menu switch works perfectly for it's normal function - to open the Input Menu - so the switch's contacts are ok - it seems that whatever in the previous firmware tells it to upgrade when the switch is held down and a new SYSTEM file is present is not doing that.

I sympathise - it took me an entire afternoon to crack it.
I left two copies of the new file on the card, one outside and one inside the SYS folder, but if the menu is not giving the option to upgrade it matters not what you load onto the card.
For such a fabulous piece of kit the firmware and clunky - almost unreadable - menus really do let it down.

Peter,

Did you ever get your H4 to accept the new firmware?

John

Also, while on the subject of Flash-based audio recorders, I noticed that Sony has released a more affordable version of their $2,000 PCM-D1 recorder. It's the PCM-D50 and it retails for $599.

No John - I've been using the H4 this week to record some music in schools, but as soon as that's done I'm returning the unit to the Zoom people for, I hope, their immediate attention!

"I put a 4GB card in mine and can now record 3:55:20 at 48k 24bit stereo (or 70:36:09 using 128k stereo MP3 !)"

Is that uninterrupted recording time, or is there a file size limitation?

There is a 2-gig limit per file.

Hi All,

On this 'very old' forum, 16 years = 160 years in our modern digital lives! It's as old as my teenage daughter!

I am still clinging on to my Zoom H4 (Not H4n), as I only need such a device once or twice a year, no point adding e-waste going to by hte latest model. Despite the bizarre user interface it's fine ... Anyway! I have been getting the 'no card' warning, and as the card that is permanently in the Zoom is 1GB I am pretty sure it's a firmware fix ... but as '160' years have passed I can not find the firmware update anywhere.

Would one of you fine people be able to send a link, or the firmware itself?

Also, can I format the Zoom with a Mac?

I'll be very impressed if there is anyone out there still listening in to this time travel message, maybe it's a bit like SETI and one of you is waiting for a signal, but thanks in advance for any help.

Best regards, Gavin

Being 174 years old, my old Zoom "is" my audio interface -- I tried lots of drivers, and settled on these with Windows 10.

Firmware is version 2.40, ASIO version is 2.0.0.3_6

Your card must be formatted FAT32, I believe.
