newbie capture/render help

I have an hdv sony camcorder. All I want to do is capture hdv video clips join them together and add simple text to show the time/date of the clip. I then want to save the "movie" to my hard drive in the same format it was imported. I don't really understand the rendering choices. I want to keep it all as simple as possible with no changes to what i have input other than to join and add text. What settings should I use please.

One thing is the technical data - another thing is where and how you want to see the result - i.e. how it works with your telly etc.
Try to start simply by importing a very short clip - just few seconds - and render using different templates - and you will quickly see and learn the differences.
