newbie - capture stills OK - video NOT OK

Ibdebozo wrote on 4/9/2003, 5:56 PM
I seem to be able to capture still images from my camera without an issue. However, when it comes to capturing a video sequence, I receive the "No video was captured." What information do people need to know about the setup or is this really a simple issue of the default settings needing to be changed somehow?

Need lots more information. Firewire connection? Camera, PC, etc. See the knowledge base, maybe start with this article.

Thanks for the link. Here is the other stuff; NOT a firewire connection. Using the RCA jack? (Newbie written all over my face) for the analog out put of a SHARP Hi8 ViewCAM (Model # VL-AH50U). The PC is a Prostar 8593 laptop with ATI Mobility 128 AGP card - (Phillips WDM Video Decoder)40GB (20+GB free) Harddrive, 512MbRAM, etc... The device manager (windows 2000) states that all these video devices are working properly.

Make sure you've got the 2.0c build installed else there could be capture probs.

Version 2.0c Build 125.

Thanks for the input.

Sorry for butting in here, are you saying, from what Grob asked - do you have, "Version 2.0c Build 125" or not?

My 2 cents:

For those unfamiliar with the Prostar 8593, I've found a spec page:
http://www.pro-star.com/index.cfm?mainpage=productdetail&model=8593

Looks like a nice notebook feature-wise.

Too tell the truth, the Sonic Foundry Video Capture program ("Vidcap") is designed mainly for DV capture. It doesn't do too well with analog capture. In fact, here is a little tidbit from the Vidcap release notes:

"Not all analog capture cards are supported at this time. If you’re using an analog card, please obtain the latest WDM (Windows Driver Model) or VFW (Video for Windows) drivers from your hardware manufacturer."

Does your notebook come with a video capture utility already? If it works, I'd probably stick with it and not worry about Vidcap.

However, if you'd really like to make a go at making Vidcap work, I (and the other forums members) would be glad to help.

Oh boy, just noticed you have an ESS Allegro or Maestro3 in your notebook. I had a heck of a lot of trouble making ESS AudioDrive (ISA) soundcards work with Vidcap (or any DirectShow capture program for that matter).

You might want to update your soundcard drives to the latest version.

As a test, you might want to try to capture without audio. (Go to the "Options" Menu, select "Preferences", then the Capture tab. There should be a "Capture Audio" checkbox. Make sure it is unchecked).

Still, I do like the Maestro 2 since it is one of the rare PCI soundcards that work well in DOS (the others being the SB Live/Audigy & ForteMedia FM801).

I don't have much to offer re analog capture. On the occasions where I've had analog I've always run it through my miniDV camcorder -- using analog in / DV out feature.

Good luck with the other posts. Grob

I've got the video capture working through video capturix 2002 (shareware). However, the audio needs to mic'd in to the microphone port. I guess that requires a plug converter of some sort from the RCA jack to a small headphone ordeal. (newbie all over this ain't it.) At least I didn't use the word "thingy".

So, about the DV, does the DV camcorder, being able to use the 1394 port(firewire), port both the video and audio through there or do you still need to attach to the sound card through some sort of bizarre plug converter (mentioned above)?

Nothing wrong with the word "thingy"!

Anyway, if you can "Pass Through" your analogue to get DV out of your cammy, then that's all you need.

IN - Analogue: Video and Audio >>>> Cammy >>>> OUT - DV: Video and Audio

THAT'S IT!

As you say - "So, about the DV, does the DV camcorder, being able to use the 1394 port(firewire), port both the video and audio through there" YES

"... or do you still need to attach to the sound card through some sort of bizarre plug converter (mentioned above)? Never seen this

Come back if you need clarifacation - yeah? It's learning stuff and "thingies"!

You need a "thingy" like this:

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=42%2D2551

DV camcorders send both audio and video data across the firewire cable. No separate cable needed. DV camcorders also have better video quality than any analog camera. If you are really into shooting video, consider getting a DV camcorder.

Also, if you like Video Capturix 2002 but don't want to pay for it, try VirtualDub instead.

Finally, did you try to capture video without audio using Vidcap?

I thought the thingy I needed was like that.

Pondering the idea of a new camera - depends on the quality of the results and if I try and try and still hate it.... we will see.
I figured the DV was able to send both signals across on the firewire.

That was the first thing I did with Vidcap is turn off the audio since I didn't have it connected. It still bumbfuzzles me that I can get one image at a time but not the video. Oh well. Off to Radio Snack.

THANKS Grazie and discdude and Grob and laz and Ibde....(that's me, nevermind)
