Newbie ? - No Sound In Video Event

David S wrote on 8/8/2009, 2:52 AM
First day of using software. Had numerous problems trying to get video imported from the disc in my Sony Handycam. Finally got that to work and now have mpg files in All Media for a Project and mpg files in a folder on my C:Drive. When I play the mpg files on my C:Drive using MPC or Media Player I get video and the sound from when it was recorded. However, in Movie Studio when I open a Project and drag a video clip from All Media to the Video Track of the Timeline and then play it, all I get is video and no sound. I'm sure the answer is obvious but I don't understand why there is no audio or what I need to do? I don't want to add voice, music, sounds effects, I just want the audio that was recorded when the video was shot. Thanks.

Try renaming the .mpg files to .vob instead.

How did you import the video files? Did you use Vegas' File / Import / DVD camcorder disc function? This takes care of all the details for you and is generally problem free.

I go to Project / New and open a nw project. I then select Import DVD Camcorder Disc and import the numerous mgp files from my Sony Camcorder. All the video clips then show up in the area next to the All Media folder. I then select video clips and drag them down to the Video Track in the Timeline. I then play the clips from the timeline. The video plays fine in the Preview window but there's no sound. I know the sound is on and I know the sound is there because when I plan yhe video clips directly from the folder on my C:Drive the audio plays. I see there is a Mute button in the Video Track but I know that's off because when I click on it and turn it on, the actual playing of the video preview goes away.

I've searched this forum and found the problem posted by ralph20 titled "no audio". I've read the messages in that thread but still no luck. I have a Sony DCF-DVD505 camcorder and am running Movie Studio 9.0a. I've tried going to 9.0b as suggested in the other thread but then the system crashes everytime I try to import a video from my camera. At least with 9.0a I can import the videos into Movie Studio and drag them to the Timeline but there is no audio that goes with it. As suggested on the youtube clip referenced in the ralph20 thread, I changed the file type of the video clips on my C:Drive from mpg to vob. Again they will play with sound from the C:Drive but when I use Import Media to bring them into Movie Studio and then drag them to the Timeline there is still no audio. Please somebody help - what can I do? Thanks.

In response to a question asked in the posting by musicvid in the June 16th thread regarding basic information needed to try and understand the problem, the videos from my camcorder are imported with:
Video codec - MPEG-2
Audio codec - Dolby Digital

Let me get this right, your Sony DCF-DVD505 camcorder is recording in Dolby Digital?

Yes but typo on my part. I have a Sony DCR-DVD505 camcorder and from the Operating Guide - "Your Camcorder has Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator installed for recording......" Plus when I down videos using Sony's Picture Motion Browser, the properties displays Audio codec as Dolby Digital.
