Newbie questions

I have a couple of questions.

1. Do the Pinnacle Dazzle video importers (or whatever they are called) work with Sony VMS? I have Hi8 tapes I would like to import into digital so I can include them in future projects. I am attracted to the dazzle because of price and availablity.

2. When I prepare a project to make a movie, do I need to render it first then select make movie and export to DVD architect? I guess I am not real sure what the purpose of "Render" is.

Avoid Dazzle like the plague. They're worthless junk. For a few dollars more you can get something much better. Look for the Canopus ADVC series. You can probably pick up something used on ebay for not much more than a Dazzle and you'll get professional quality.

Rendering is the process of making the final output file. Make Movie will render your project for you.

In Vegas, you create a 'project' (=a combination of filmevents, music, titles, transitions etc). In order to view the final result, you must render your project, ie create a movie file. There are many formats you can render to, and your choice depends on what platform your final movie will be played:
1) If your platform will be a television (dvd), render it as mpg2 file. DVDA will use this file without rerendering, which is a time saver.
2) If your medium will be a pc, go for the wmv format, with the appropriate template. (It takes some time to find the right balance between quality and file size, but you will find a lot of help on this forum)
3) High Definition is a whole other ball game. Other members of this forum are better placed to help you with that.
