Newbie(?) Why do I Get Jitter After Dvd Burn?

Zion wrote on 5/30/2005, 12:25 PM
I used Vagas 6.0b to render an mpeg2 video with the dvda3 template widescreen and the mpeg file looks fine after rendered. It even looks fine after dvdA3 prepares the file for playedback on the PC, but when I burn the dvd and play back on a TV theres jitter in some spots.
Why?

P.S The original footage was shot in 16X9 with the Sony Z1.

Lots of possible reasons - the media you used, your burner, your player, too high a bitrate at those particular points, etc.

One customer we had complained of something similar - it only happened on one of his players though - the other player didn't exhibit the problem. After much work, I was finally able to isolate the issue to a lot of little spikes in the bitrate at the trouble points - one or 2 spikes, no problem, but 5 or 6 spikes close together sent the player over the edge.

You can also try using a higher quality media; I've been quite happy so far with Taiyo Yuden and I'm switching away from Ritek (after having a run of bad burns). Yes, TY media does cost more per blank, but so far it's been worth the extra cost.

I've personally not found a lot of difference when burning at 4X, 8X or 12X though lots of people say that lower burning speed is important (though I remember reading an article saying that too low is as bad as too high - had to do with the wobble of the disk at lower speeds I think).

How did you isolate the spikes in the bitrate? And what did you do to fix the problem?

The funny thing is if I play the same dvd on the the computer there is no problem.

I purchased a bitrate viewer that let me look at the data stream. This is not to say that it's the same problem you are having - you'll need to try some of the things I suggested to try and isolate the problem.

So, what's happening in your video in the "spots" where it jitters? Do they have anything in common -- perhaps they were still images, or they have text, or...?

Off the top of my head, I'd guess its an interlacing issue, particularly since you say it looks fine on the computer but not on a TV.

It's shots of slow moving water lakes, rivers ect.
It's seems to be happening around the transitions.

the media you used: I tried different media same problem.

the burner you used: I tried different burner same problem.

your player: I tried all my friends and family's player same problem.

too high a bitrate: I tried lower bitrates same problem.

And I tried different speeds, field orders , rendering methods ect.

Anyone with a Sony HDR-FX1 or Z1 know how to fix this?

Thanks ZION

Try reducing the speed of the transitions to say 2 seconds or more.
