My foodie coworkers like truffles from Teuscher Chocolates. Whenever we're in Union Square we pick up a few for the office.

They are also fond of John and Kira's for gift boxes.

And then a "show-off" friend of the boss gave them two boxes from Debauve & Gallais. He claimed they were the best in the world. I don't know about that but they were certainly pretty with their little flecks of silver and gold leaf.

Of the bunch, I like John and Kira's best but they're all excellent. There's just too much chocolate in this world to try it all.

There are so many very different kinds of premium chocolates, I don't see how anybody could say "this is the best one."

It would be like saying "this is the best wine of all." For what?

Now for truffles, See's Candy really is outstanding.

A lot better than Godiva, for reasons that become apparent as soon as you read the list of ingredients, and certainly as soon as you taste them (assuming you have taste).

There is a 5:1 range in the number of taste buds on a human tongue, between different individuals.

Assuming you are in say the top 20% of humans when it comes to the number of tastebuds on your tongue, it still takes many years of training to be able to fully enjoy the immensely complex flavors in wine and chocolate.

One of Trader Joe's Pound Plus chocolate bars ranked in the top 10 worldwide in a gourmet blind tasting, in competition with vastly more expensive premium chocolate. TJ's 500g bars sell for $3 + change... Comes from Belgium with Love :O).

My favorite chocolates are spiked with savory spices -- ancho, chiptotle, chili flakes, black pepper, or wasabi, or hard spices like cinammon. The Aztecs used to drink a combination hot cocoa and chilis, believing it had magical restorative powers.

Not sure about magic but it's damn enoyable.

If you're ever in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, try the spiced chocolate chili cake at Crave on Henry Street. I worked there for a time and had the pleasure of bringing home the loose ends and scraps from the batch -- I can remember working to convince some relatives to try them out, and after slowly warming to the idea, I came home later to find the bag nearly empty! :)

Jim,

Have you tried Jacues Torres Wicked Hot Chocolate? Brooklyn's own, though he now has some stores in Manhattan. It sounds right up your alley.

My wife is a food writer and just did a story on premium spicy chocolates and she says these are good

truffles
LA Burdick, Chocolat Moderne, MarieBelle and Vosges

bars
Dagoba xocolatl

both
Cowgirl Chocolates
Chuao

I didn't taste those, but I did try Casa Don Puglisi and they're spicy chocolate bar is amazing. Bedford Cheese Shop in Williamsburg carries them.

She just IMed me this blurb
Casa Don Puglisi Pure Chocolate from Modica

Back on topic, Spot if you want any of these, I'll try to get some.

Did a job at a Hershey plant out near Sacramento many years ago. Their security was tighter than the Bank of America data center we shot at earlier in the year. They are very afraid of losing trade secrets.

It was just an interesting experience because I'd not have expected a candy factory to have the highest security I'd every had to get through.

I was in Vegas about this time last year and it was just very nice. Not hot, just warm and pleasant.

We rented a car and got out of there the next day. The whole point was to drive over to Death Valley for the wildflowers (and to see people Kayaking in the valley. There was standing water there. I don't think I'll ever see that again.)

Good morning Douglas.

It is "goodnight" here in Perth, but I am looking forward to hearing what transpires while I sleep.
