NLE Shootout in Cleveland

Yesterday I attended the morning session of the DVLine NLE Shootout. The morning included presentations by Pinnacle (Anthony Martarina) and SoFo. We were very fortunate to have Douglas Spotted Eagle present for SoFo. Because of other commitments, I could only attend the morning so I missed the Avid Technology presentaiton and the presentation by DVline.

Pinnacle's presentation went well, but lacked depth. Too much time was spent trying to wow the audience with special video effects. The Pinnacle presenter openly stated that Edition's audio could not come close to SoFo's audio capabilities. The presenter also seemed to focus on the user interface, which he claimed to be much easier to use because of the lack of pull down menus and little if any individual or cascading pop-up windows.

Next was Douglas Spotted Eagle and he gave an excellent presentation of Vegas showcasing its many capabilites. He didn't waste precious time with a PowerPoint presentation, as in the case of Pinnacle. I would say the highlight of the presentation was when Douglas demonstrated super sampling with a very old Thomas Edison clip from the Smithsonian. This blew everyone away! Another impressive point was Douglas running multiple instances of Vegas on a laptop.

A question was raised regarding the acquisition of Vegas by Sony Pictures. Douglas was very upbeat and positive regarding the future of Vegas and working with Sony. He deferred the question to a SoFo business manager, Don Regal. In less than one minute Don gave the company line and that was it. It would have been nice to hear a little more regarding this, but maybe nothing more could or should have been said at this type of event.

After Douglas's presentation, there were many people surrounding him and asking questions. I think Douglas and Vegas were a hit!

Kenneth Bell from DVLine did a nice job of hosting the event. He did a good job of appearing vendor neutral. His sales efforts for preconfigured NLE workstations were not excessive. Thanks to Ken for putting on the show.

If you're new to Vegas, I highly recommend attending the shootout if its in your area. I learned more about Vegas and had a chance to meet Douglas. Attending this event assured me I made the right decision purchasing Vegas.

Your lucky! You got to see DSE. But that's ok because Michael Bryant as amazing as well. Did DSE show HD editing? 24p editing? This was what seemed to wow the audience as well as the color correctors and sound tools as well. Did the pinnacle guy give out dollar bills?

You didn't miss anything from Avid. Trust me! Snooooooooozeeeeeeeee

DSE talked about HD editing. I don't recall him saying much about 24p editing. Yes, the Pinnacle rep gave out dollars for reciting the company slogan. Seemed kind of cheesy and unprofessional to me. Of course then you have a few members of the audience acting like pavlogs dogs trying to get another dollar. What some people will do for a buck.
