The audio was probably ac3, if you encoded the files separately, as one would for a DVD Architect preset. Otherwise if you used just the Mpeg2 preset the audio would be interleaved and also encoded as Mpeg2.

Neither of these types of audio files will import into Vegas. However other programs will . Like Sound Forge, and other unmentionable programs.

Just import your files, video and all into Sound Forge, and re-encode the audio portion to .wav, and then import back into Vegas.

You shouldn't have any sync problems, as both audio and video files will be the same length. If you do, Vegas can re-sync them. It is under the right click drop-down menu.
