No Audio Track

(A solution to this problem is stated in message No. 80)

Sometime when I capture DV in Video Capture, I don’t get an
audio track when I open it in VideoFactory and I can’t
figure out what to do so that I do get an audio track.
Can someone help me?

In the past, capture has seemed to start working
without my doing anything except trying to capture again,
and again, and again.

I am always able to play the captured video in the
VideoCapture and hear the audio even if there is no audio
track when the file is opened in VideoFactory.

The “capture audio” box is checked and the "capture audio and video
into separate streams (type 2 AVI)" box is unchecked in preferences
in Video Capture. In VideoFactory, when I look
at “media - stream properties” it indicates “video 1”
properties if there is no audio track, and a choice
of “video 1” or “audio 2” properties if there is an audio
track.

Thanks for your help.

[The following comment was added 12-21-2000: The information below
was correct at the time it was written; however the behavior
describes is inconsistent.]

I finally found something that works, but I don’t
understand what’s going on.

I tried various combinations of what I thought were drivers
for the IEEE 1394 interface. One is in the system
properties – device manager - for the 1394 bus controller
and the other is the “DV driver” selected by DvSwitch which
is a program that was installed with StudioDV. My choices
for the device manager were “PCI OHCI compliant IEEE 1394
Host Controller” and “Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE
1394 Host Controller”. My choices for the DV driver where
Microsoft - msdv.sys, and Texas Instruments - dvcam.sys
(although when I searched for dvcam.sys on my disk, I could
not find it).

When I selected the TI bus controller and the MS DV driver,
I got a sound track in VideoFactory when I opened the
file.

When I selected the PCI bus controller and the TI DV
driver, I got a sound track in VideoFactory, but I could
not control the camera with Video Capture.

When I selected the PCI bus controller and the MS DV
driver, I got no sound track in VideoFactory when I opened
the file.

When I selected the TI bus controller and the TI DV driver,
Video Capture acted like there was no camera connected.

Sorry if I caused anyone to needlessly spend time on my
problem.

Well, I thought I had the problem solved. Today the audio
stopped working again, and the device manager and DV driver
were those that had worked before. Now the only
combination that produced audio in VideoFactory was the TI
device manager and the TI DV driver (the only DV driver
recommended by Sonic Foundry is the Microsoft DV driver).

If anyone has the explanation, I would like to hear it.

Thanks.

You should use the TI bus driver and the MS DV driver...I'm
betting that you have a Canon ZR10...if so there are known
issues with these if the camera isn't playing when capture
is started. The next update to Video Capture will provide
a pre-roll function, for now you should push play and then
start capturing after say a second or so has elapsed.
Please let us know if this fixes it.

dee, your suggestion worked. If I start my ZR10 first I
get an audio track; if I don't start if first, I don't.
Thanks for your help. Now on to my next problem. I hope
it's not the ZR10 again.
