No bugs in Vegas 5?

StormMarc wrote on 4/20/2004, 5:36 PM
I don't see much talk about bugs in the new version. If this was Adobe I would not believe it but with the Vegas crew I would not be surprised. So is it relatively bug free? On another note, Adobe's actually releasing a point release and expecting $99 even though they never fixed the intiial bugs in PPro. People on the Adobe forums are livid and some even threatening to switch to Vegas.

I have not discovered bug #1. Just a few interface glitches... missing tool tips on some buttons, the arrow keys on Pan/Crop/Track Motion squares don't work (not a bug, but definitely should be changed), that's it so far.

Stability - It's one of those features you don't appreciate until its gone. Except for you I guess!

This isn't the first time Adobe has pulled the half-point release for $100 scheme!

No new ones here. Only the older ones ...

This is not really a bug but if you open a v4 project that has more than 10 markers, the other markers won't have any number, if you add a marker after those noname markers, it,ll start counting at 11.

There *IS* a bug. :) In the "track motion" menu they left out the "presets" menu. They admited it was a mistake. :)

not a major one, but one none the less. Also, anytime I try to add a "mute" enveloped it ALWAYS crashed out. No biggie since i don't use them (and not sure why they are there).

Now when you mentioned it ... ;-) And I think the toolbar on the left side was left out too.
And another user in our Vegas-forum reports that he has no toolbar on the left side of the Pan/Crop tool, though on my system, there is one. Strange.

I don't have the mute envelope bug you mention - they work perfectly on audio and vid tracks.

I really like it as a feature, possibly more useful for audio than video.
TheHappyFriar wrote on 4/20/2004, 7:16 PM
What's it do anyway?
ibliss wrote on 4/20/2004, 7:33 PM
Well...
it's automation for the mute switches! You get an envelope which can go two places, right at the top for un-mute, or right at the bottom for mute. So you can mute the middle of an event without having to split it and delete, and move the mute points later. This of course means that you can edit the event fx/pan-crop and the whole video either side of the muted section will change.

(hope this makes sense!)

I'll let you ponder the possibilities.... and just add that you can record mute automation 'live'.

Did they replace Track Motion presets with some other kind of "memorized" feature? I know they completely restructured the inteface, but if they left out the "remember this," that'll have to be fixed in 5b -- now that we can manipulate on 3 planes, there's more reason than EVER not to have to re-do everything...
TheHappyFriar wrote on 4/20/2004, 9:21 PM
They said that they accidently left it out, so it's probley in there, just switched off by accident.
It should be in 5.0b

The media bins have a bug, but it is cosmetic. I added a "group" (shift select) of items to media bins I created (i.e., 25 song files to a "song" bin). They didn't show up at all...until I changed view types from thumbnail, etc. back to list--then they all showed up.

Everything worked, but I thought the bins were not accepting more than one sound/graphic file at a time (versus the group I had selected) so I kept going back and fourth. When I switched views the first time, they were all there, and I realized it was a cosmetic bug.

Track Motion bug:

-Changing Track Motion setting dont delete pre-rendered file.

-No ‘Y’ ajustement when Changing ‘X’ value even if "Lock Aspect Ration" is checked (In left menu).
MRe wrote on 4/20/2004, 11:12 PM
This is something I need to verify but It is easy to reproduce, so you can try it yourselves:

- add two events
- show scopes and switch them to "auto update"
- add color correction fx to either of events
- change the default settings (color, gain, etc)
- repeat this with the other event
- don't close the fx-window
- move back to first event
- change settings again

--> scopes are not updated. They won't change until you delete the fx-plugin from the chain and reapply it

I'm not 100% sure of this because it was quite late at the night when I encountered this. I'll try it again tonight.

Okay, kinda dodgy on the details but I had a weird one.

I think I had another instance of Vegas rendering to a folder with other avi's that I was using in another open instance of Vegas. When I went to drag a clip from the Vegas Explorer window, a different clip showed up on the time line. Did it a few times, thought perhaps I had rendered over the file I had wanted. As a last ditch before re-rendering, a right click and " refresh ", dragged it up and it was correct. Haven't tried to duplicate this but thought it was worth a mention.

...and vice versa.

The Track Motion window seems generally rather unfinished: the 'workspace' looks like a prototype rather than the finished article.

THis is something that also happens in Vegas 4. Some say it has nothing to do with Vegas but has to do with Windows. For me the issue only happens in Vegas so i have never understood the media bin/explorer/empty-but-not-really media bins problem not being a Vegas bug.

I use the event/pan/crop screen to adjust up to 500 photos at a time (for a big project with pictures and video). It has a few bugs and two new usability problems.

Bug:

- I can resize and then drag the boxed area up and down, but NOT left and right. This is a bug. The workaround is to use the numbers and/or slider on the left--but it is a PAIN. This should be fixed in the 5.0a release.

- When I exit this screen, and then come back, it does not always remember to previous state. In fact, I have come back in to find the image zoomed way in, requiring me to use the magnafying glass (since the auto-resize button was removed). This is a bug.

Decreased usability:

Previous versions had an auto-resize (dashed box) button on the top left. It was not standard, but it is now gone. It has the magnifying glass, but it takes multiple trys to get it re-sized, versus one click. The previous button should be restored--this is a PAIN, especially considering how easy and automatic it was before.

The checkbox to maintain aspect ratio is now gone. The new interface has a YES/No option. The problem is that it now takes twice as many clicks (and twice as long) to turn it off. This is used almost EVERY time I crop a picture!

The use case: User goes into the event pan/crop screen. He turns off the two buttons to constrain to center or side, pulls the sides to get the image ratio "almost" correct and click the maintain aspect ratio checkbox to fill in any remaining black space. Then he exits or pans, crops, etc. The yes/no buttom is a BIG slow down (considering how fast I usually go through this process). Switch it back to buttons to reduce keystrokes in this already tedious process.

Windows Standards

We don't want a non-standard Windows product (which is what the Sony team is obviously trying to fix), or we end up with that Pinnacle garbage.

However, they've got to spend hours and days using the application (or talk to someone who does) before removing these convenient features (often reducing the time in half!!). They can still use windows conventions (checkboxes work), but don't just change it for cosmetic reasons when the INCREDIBLE good usuabilty goes down the draim!

Sounds like you must have clicked on the restraint button. It the lowest button to the left of the number boxes. It will allow you to constrain between left/right only, up/down only, and anywhere.

I just noticed and came back here to edit my response, but you already responded!

A "feature" defined as a bug... gosh, I just hate it when I have to eat my own words. Well, that "bug" is fixed--thanks!

Any others?

Another bug (V4 and V5)

Try this:
Make a transition (exemple: 3D Fly default) and Selectively Prerender Video.
Drag & drop à new transition. Same type but different preset (exemple: 3D Fly Tumble In)
The prerendered file is not deleted.

MRe, No repro on your scopes problem.

Are you sure that the edit caret is under the event currently being scoped?

That is; you ar not just jumping to add the fx by the button and leaving the caret parked at other events? If so then its correct that it does not update as nothing undefoot is changing.

No loss of prerender when changing transition preset.

Noted, adding to the database

Thanks
