No hotkey for "Selectively Paste Event Attributes"?!

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 8/17/2022, 7:26 PM

Hi!

I frequently use (and prefer) "selective-paste" for event attributes over regular "paste event attributes", and was trying to map a hotkey to it (customize keyboard) and can't find it there... am I just missing it? Or was this overlooked when "selective-paste" was created in V18 and not addressed in 19 or 20?

OK. Lack of reply here suggests to me this is a minor bug/oversight probably very easily fixed in the next release.

How can I submit this as a bug report? I spent 15 minutes looking for an easy way to submit bug reports to MAGIX/Vegas team, but it must be seriously hidden somewhere! (or I'm just missing the obvious)

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns Hi, I tried having a look n just like you say it's not an option in V19, this post will jump to the top of the list because I've replied but there's a post at the top of the page V20 Feedback, fr0sty might point you in the right direction for a bug report or say why it isn't available if you comment on there 👍 https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-20-feedback--136686/

Will do -- just seems that clumping every single finding into a single thread is a sure way to have things get lost in the shuffle ;-)

There is no hotkey, but if you have a device such as a Shuttle Contour controller, you could probably write a macro that would do it with hitting one button on the device.
rightclick, V, would do it, I think. (after selecting the destination event)

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 8/18/2022, 8:29 PM

Interesting.. what makes you think "v" would select that context menu? Not sure it is doing that one actually, not just "paste event attributes", since when you right-click, v, the "which attributes do you want to to paste" menu does not pop up.

Either way -- this seems like a minor bug/oversight, an easy addition in future release?

When you right click, (you have to rightclick on the event first) and look at the "paste event attributes", the V is underlined. This means at this point it is a hotkey. Windows works that way.

(there is no hotkey for selectively paste even attributes) so sorry I misread your original question.

So you would program the macro to "rightclick, pause, V"

@DMT3 - Sure, but to do that there still isn't a Hotkey to use for selective-paste to be incorporated within a Macro:

There's no HK for it.

However, there is a Paste Event Arttibute command that could be used:

And again nothing that will bring up the selective-paste Menu.

rightclick, V, would do it, I think. (after selecting the destination event)

@DMT3 - Correct, however, that still won't bring up the selective-paste Menu. To do that the Macro would need to Right-Click and then "Arrow-Down" to navigate to the selective-paste Menu option. It's a really lumpy workaround but could be done. I've used this with CSP Macros when there wasn't a Direct KP command. If there was a direct Command for access to the selective-paste Menu. Pity...

DMT3 wrote on 8/18/2022, 8:49 PM

@Grazie I realized after reading the original post that "selective..." was the question. My solution works for the paste all, but as you wrote, not easily for the selective.

Grazie wrote on 8/18/2022, 9:10 PM

@DMT3 - Sure, but you were correct, it could be done with a Macro within CSP. It would need a:

i - 14 Down Arrow to get to the selective-paste Menu option, and THEN

ii - Pause the Macro whilst the selection was made (😜), and THEN

iii - action it.

Can it be done? Er, certainly . . . but until that time its gonna be as it stands.

DMT3 wrote on 8/18/2022, 9:25 PM

Even a hot key wouldn't pause while making selection, that would have to be a manual entry. I see there is a "repeat paste", I wonder if after doing the first selective paste, if this repeats the selection?

Grazie wrote on 8/18/2022, 10:14 PM

@DMT3 - Sure, but a CSP MACO would 😉, and then:

that would have to be a manual entry.

@DMT3 - Sure, and off we'd go again.

@DMT3 = Dunno, but you're probably correct.

CSP Macros are a passionate enterprise for me.

DMT3 wrote on 8/18/2022, 11:00 PM

I enjoy playing with macros as well. They can be quite powerful. For a specific job, I wrote a macro that would split an event, select the first part of the split scene and delete it. Combined with ripple this made removing chunks of video very quick and easy.

misohoza wrote on 8/18/2022, 11:40 PM

You could do it by pressing:

Alt then E then V then Arrow Down then Enter

Too many keys to press so it's easier just using the mouse. But if you can program that key sequence it could work, maybe...

Grazie wrote on 8/18/2022, 11:51 PM

That’s cool! I once did a CSP Macro that produced an L J Cut, that was fun 🤩.

@misohoza - Yup, I wrote that above 😉.

Technically -- Alt E, V, Down-arrow, Enter, Enter (that second enter needed to make the paste happen)

Two versions and three years later, still no way to map a key to selective-paste directly :-/

I made it work using an "AutoHotKey" script last night.. already saving me tons of time.

Just surprised in the two version updates, this wasn't added.

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns for what purpose do you copy/paste event attributes? Isn't it easier to use track fx or an adjustment track/event to apply certain events with the same attributes.

@3POINT Since you asked --- (it's not tooooo long an answer, but I'm being thorough)

95% of our work is stage productions -- filming, post-producing, authoring/hosting and streaming. Musicals, Dance Shows and Recitals, Festivals, Concerts.

Simplified workflow in post is:

  1. Load media from SD to project folder (and backup) -- typically 6-8 cameras, mixed 4K and FHD, filmed mostly on Canon camcorders, some Osmo actions, GoPro and OBSBOT PTZ
  2. Setup each camera on its own track, as well as multi-channel audio
  3. PluralEyes for alignment -- NOTE: Vegas's alignment tool falls short of being efficient for aligning 8 cameras, 2 acts, for a 2.5 hour show, and PluralEyes is off the market now. :( We will have a need/gap if/when PluralEyes stops working
  4. Pass 1: Make Multi-Channel (multi-take) track and edit the show
  5. Pass 2: Tweak/refine all the edits
  6. Finishing by going through project start to finish
    1. Mixing Audio (when engineer hasn't already mixed)
    2. Applying "make it look the best" FX as needed -- NeatVideo, Sharpen, Color Grading/correction, additional tweaks to Pan/Crop and final editing choices
    3. Adding SFX using Boris as needed, project-dependent
    4. Titling, Credit Rolls
  7. Rendering, Authoring and Delivery, multiple formats -- Vegasaur often used to help

The Finishing work is where this comes in, and here's why I'm doing event-level attribute pasting.

Everything is in a single master track. Applying track-level noise or color correction makes no sense since it really is camera (Media-level) dependent, or sometimes dependent on the lighting of a particular scene (Event level).

Same goes for noise reduction. Maybe 60% of the show is lit sufficient where we didn't gain up (raise ISO) our cameras to the point where sensor noise is a problem, and only 40% is noisier than I'd like. Neat Video doesn't really want to be applied at the media level, so I apply it event-by-event when the noise is apparent to me (usually in solid darker or vivid LED-lit colors). I have saved groups of FX that I drag on, but the same Neat/Sharpen affect is often applied to lots of events in a nearby cluster.

I'm playing the timeline and when I hit a noisy event, Select-Paste.

Not all my cameras gain the same -- my wide cameras will be open more and have less gain than those that pushed in tighter.

I'm ABSOLUTELY always finding new ways to be more efficient, even after the 18 years I've been doing this.. so I'm open to suggestions on how to do this more efficiently while maintaining a high-quality bar. :-)
