No Render At All on QuadCore

Darren Powell wrote on 1/31/2008, 4:58 AM
Hello,

I've posted many times before following my problems with crashes using Cineform files on my QuadCore machine while editing my feature film project ...

I've converted laboriously my Cineforms into M2T's using my Dual Core machine sitting next to my Quad and have had a couple of weeks of error free editing of the M2T's on the Quad machine ...

BUT NOW t's time to RENDER! BUT GUESS WHAT ?????????????

Nothing happens ... Nothing at all ...

I've tried M2T's ... with and without Smart Render etc .... with all of the other variables thrown in for good measure ...

I've tried Movs ... no joy...

I've tried wmv's ... no joy ...

I've tried M2T's of course .... no joy ...

I've tried 8bit and 32bit colour space stuff... of course 32bit falls over but hey ... that' par for the course ... 8 bit is more stable ... HOWEVER ... !!!!!!!!!

Vegas 8b ... will not render on my Quad ... no matter what.

Nothing happens ... the machine sits there ... the 'Approximate time left' goes up ... the 'Elapsed time' goes up ... NOTHING HAPPENS ...

I've broken my project up into palatable 20 mins segments ... Vegas 7.0 would have done this in its sleep ...

I've turned off Skype ... I've turned off AVG from my system tray ... I've turned off my webcam ... I've turned off anything that may be realistically using up any of my FOUR GIG OF MEMORY ....

BUT VEGAS PRO 8B CAN'T MANAGE A RENDER ... NOTHING HAPPENS....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vegas PRO 8 ... a and b ....are FLAWED ....

SONY FIX THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are my system specs if anyone at Sony is interested ... by the way ... my computer is just an effing computer with a processor and 4GB of RAM ... your software is NOT WORKING CORRECTLY... MY DUAL CORE MACHINE SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO MY QUAD WITH THE SAME VERSION OF PRO 8b can RENDER STUFF BETTER THAN THE QUAD... NOT GREAT... BUT AT LEAST IT RENDERS .... SONY ... FIX THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'M NOT GOING TO OPEN ANOTHER TICKET OR SIT UP UNTIL 2AM TO TALK TO SOME TEENAGER AT MADISON ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ... SONY TECH GUYS ... IF YOU CAN'T FIX THIS ... SELL THE SOFTWARE BACK TO SONIC FOUNDRY AND LET THE REAL PROGRAMMERS FIX IT.

Darren Powell
Pissed off Vegas User ... HAPPY UNTIL 8.0 PRO ... (WHY THE HELL DID I DOWNGRADE TO THIS CRAP ???????????????)

Go to support and fill out a bug report so that it is officially on record. If they get enough of them then they know it stands a chance of being a TRUE bug.

I would hope by now they've got enough to realise that something is wrong. You could try posting your problem in the Sound Forge forum. At least there they've acknowledge the problems in the latest build of SF.

Which really annoys me to some extent. I skipped the upgrade to SF8 and bought SF9 mainly for the iZotopes plugs only to find that using them in Vegas 7 can cause some really freaky problems. SF9 itself has been so mangled that even a casual SF user like me finds it useless. The motivation for changing major functionality in SF9 seems to have been because it was too confusing the way it was!
All I can say is I managed to use SF7, SF9 is impossible to figure out and the added functionality useless and unreliable. At least I've still got SF 7 and Vegas 7 so I shouldn't gripe too much.

In my humble unsubstantiated opinion there are two things messing with V8.0b (this is strictly theory): With XP 32 bit and 4 gigs 667 memory and gobs of USB IRQ's there is some kind of interaction which starts hanging things up. In my system with Gigabyte board and 8 gigs of Kingston 800 DDR2 memory (showing 3.2 gigs in XP) and 7 SATA drives, one IDE drive, 5 SCSI drives, USB keyboard and mouse with XP 32 bit opening an application would take forever as V8 would open in small bits with the hard drive light slow blinking in between opening bits 5 times about 1 second per blink. The mouse would not function during these blinks. After removing XP Pro 32 bit and installing Vista 64 bit the blinks were eliminated and 99% of the time everything worked fine except for once in a while the mouse would stop during hard drive something or other whatever it was doing. Looking at the IRQ loading I wondered how the computer would function at all sometimes with 6 items on one IRQ, mostly USB (8) , Network (3), and firewire (1) stuff. My machine listed IRQ #23 as the highest.
This IRQ baloney is turning into a nightmare.

Admitedly this seems to be some sort of problem that is happening to plenty of people, but I have to say, I've had no problems at all of this sort, and I can't understand ( if it is indeed a software problem ) how it is being so sporadic. I am inclined to believe that it may well be some form of hardware thing that only certain folks are having???

That said, I wish you guys having problems the best, as once 8b came out I was sailing smooth ( for me it actually fixed some issues, one being with multi-core usage and multiple PNG's on the timeline that all had transparency enabled).

I would find some comfort in a Sony employee at least showing up here long enough to post a "we're working on it", or whatever. Silence is not golden.

Darren, what can I say..... I feel your pain!
Darren Powell wrote on 1/31/2008, 1:26 PM
Thanks so much for posting everyone ... considering how much yelling and screaming I included in my post late last night I'm very impressed that anyone responded ... really appreciate it!

It is totally weird how sporadic the problems in Vegas Pro 8b are! I can't work it out which is the cause of all my frustration.

I don't have any PNG's or other graphics on my timeline - therefore I don't have alpha channels / transparent layers etc to worry about.

I don't have any Cineforms anymore (Thank God - NEO was rubbish) ... I ONLY have m2t's - it's a no-brainer and still Vegas refuses to do its job.

I tell you what - drmathprog I agree with you ... even just a courtesy post from Sony saying 'we're working on it' would be nice to hear ... Vegas Pro 8 has MAJOR issues ... and if I didn't have the luxury of having my old Dual Xeon machine sitting right next to my Quad which will at least allow me to 'painfully'' render segments of my project for stitching together ... I would be totally screwed.

Thanks again everyone.

Yeh I think you're right JJKizak ... it's the transition from 32 bit to 64 bit which has stuffed things up I think ... remember the problems with the transition from 16 bit to 32 bit ... 16 bit computers with 32 bit extensions - all that stuff... that would explain why Vegas 8 can handle some machines with various configs and not others.

I wish I could have just bought an R4000 Silicon Graphics 64 bit machine off the shelf in 1992. Save waiting all these years to finally get to 64 bit while hitting major speed bumps along the way.

I have a Dell XPS 720, Quad Core 4GB RAM, Vista Home Premium, Vegas 8b and have absolutely no problem at all rendering M2t projects.

One peculiar situation I did run in to once: I had a prerendered mpg intro clip at the beginning of the time line with M2t clips following. Only the first mpg clip would render. Solution was to select the entire time line (using the slide arrows at top of time line) before rendering, then all worked well. I don't remember this happening under XP.

Any chance you have a prerendered clip at the start of the timeline?

I don't know if this will help but try changing the setting under "Preferences, Video" that's called "Maximum number of rendering threads". For the QX6700, it should default to 8. Try setting it to 1 and working your way up. You could also try changing the core affinity in the Windows Task Manager, so that Vegas only uses one core. Now neither of these suggestions will fix your problem, as they both defeat the point of having a quad core processor, but it might give you some idea of what's going on. Vegas 8 Pro definitely works with quad core processors, but my experience is with Vista x64.

Darren went through all that in another thread. It got him limping along but not enough. Good advice though!

I have no idea what all the report means, but I did take time to slowly scan through it and amongst it did I see "8% free disc space"? With a warning to rectify? Would this be something?

Was this part of the report, or was it added after? "Problem Disk free space is only 8% on drive K:."

Funny enough - I have no render issues at all with Vegas 8 and my Q6600, running with XP SP2. That does not help Darren a lot - I can imagine how you feel! But frankly spoken, given the fact that other user like me are able to render with quadocore processors, shows that
a) it seems to be not a general quadcore issue, and
b) offers the possibility that there is something different wrong in the hardware.

Running a lot of forum discussions, I am pessimistic really that we will be able to find out what is wrong here. The question is really, how to support Darren but also how to allow Sony to find out what is going on here.

SFX: Crickets!

drmathprog is 100% correct. Someone should at least ACT like they're concerned that these many users are experiencing problems.

Rob,

I figured as much, since that's the first thing that I would do. I'll check that thread out if I can find it.
rmack350 wrote on 2/3/2008, 11:33 AM
Grazie, you're a gem for reading all the way through that report! It's awfully long.

The part you're seeing is the output of a system profiling utility. It's not actually part of Vegas' error output. Even though the profiler is warning that there's only 8% of the volume free, that's still something like 36 GB (from memory, which only lasts a few moments for me). Yes, low disk space could cause a problem but that particular disk volume probably isn't an issue.

Just in terms of general problem solving, the best course is always to simplify the problem. It's not always the first choice because it takes time and patience, but it's the methodical way to do it. Unfortunately it's almost impossible to do this yourself when you're in the middle of a project and trying to do your own troubleshooting.

Moving the project over to a working machine was probably Darren's best move. Next would be to back up all the data on the Quad and then hand the machine over to someone else who doesn't have a deadline. From there, I'd strip the system down to the bare essentials, install two fresh hard drives, Just 1 or 2 GB RAM, and start rebuilding the system. You want the machine to be as minimal as possible so that the list of possible problems is as short as possible. Just start stepping through the software installations, trying to keep things as minimal as possible, until things start breaking. Hopefully you get to a point where you see what's causing the trouble.

The main thing, I think, is to be able to hand over the problem to someone else. You just can't solve these problems under the gun.

I usually think a positive report like yours is helpful because it at least says that it's possible for the software to work. The idea isn't to discount someone's problem but to give them some hope that it can be solved.

Eventually, you try so many things to try to get something to work that it's hard to be sure what state your computer is in.

I just spent two afternoons trying to solve a problem with getting Firefox to play embedded video. Stupidly, I tried tweaks to the code left and right. It wasn't until I created a new empty page and put just the barest code into it that I was able to track down the problem, which was related to the way Dreamweaver was dealing with a fix for Object tags. The lesson for me (one that I have to learn again and again) is to simplify the problem.

Wolfgang S. wrote on 2/3/2008, 12:02 PM
Yes, I agree with Rob - the only way to address such an issue is a clear logical test serie.

I would even be more radical. Maybe make an image of the existing system even if I do not think that you will need that in future. But to be on the sure side. I tend to use Acronis Trueimage for that.

Then then I would delete the system partion and the programm partiton, and setup the system completely new. After installation of XP and SP2 I would install Trueimage, and make a first image of the blank system (even without drivers).

Next I would install all the latest drivers, check if I see some conflicts in the hardwaer manager, and then generate the 2nd Image.

Then I would install Vegas 7e AND Vegas 8d - first Vegas 7, then Vegas 8. And also the DVDA. This sequence has the sense, that you bring in all the .net versions in the system, that are required to run also older scripts. After that I would generate the 3rd image.

And thats it. Now I would test the sytem and the render behaviour - without and before the installation of any other software. If Vegas 8b works fine here, then you have proven that the system works fine in terms of hardware, but then you have proven also that Vegas 8b works fine with your blank hardware. If Vegas 8b shows the same errors, then you can eiter believe in bugs of Vegas, or in bugs in the hardware.

I do not know what other kind of software you have on your machine - but I am quite careful what I install on procutivity systems. On my quadcore, you have some tools, the Sony software, I have also Edius installed - some authoring tools like Ulead moviefactory 6 and a player software - and nothing else. No office. No virus scanner. Nothing.

So, if your system passes the 3rd image successfully, I would install the other software step by step. And would always test if Vegas 8b renders fine - to be able to find out what is going wrong. Due to the images you should be able to roll back very quick, if necessary.

Yes, such an approach is work. But it is the best idea to track such a bug down systematically. If you are not experienced enough to do that, organize somebody who can do that for you - that is educated enough to work through that in a systematical way. It is no rocket science at the end of the day, it is only a bloody fu... PC.

I'd actually recommend handing the problem system over from day one. Watching the process of trying to get Media100 and 844x working in the middle of a feature, I'd say this is no job for a stressed out editor.

We had gotten all the hardware through a very experienced local integrator but even with that it was difficult to get replacement systems. People just don't keep expensive RAID arrays sitting on shelves to use as spares. Yet this is the sort of support you need when your edit system starts to fall apart.

Seems like there ought to be a business opportunity here.

I'm suspecting more of a system/setup issue by chance...could be an I/O issue. Did you put this sys together and install the OS and all applications? Are you sure your hard drives are setup properly?...raid used anywhere 9and if so all cntrlr drivers up to date and settings are verified?

Tough but it could be a failing/bad piece of hardware somewhere in there (from mobo to hard drives...you'll have to go through it all now).

if you didn't build/insytall this sys I would learn how and redo things yourself (if you don't know how then I always say "it's time to learn". Knowing how just adds to your arsenal of knowledge in toubleshooting and resolve.

Know your BIOS and proper settings for your hardware. Know your ide/sata and onboard raid settings, ram settings, etc..etc.
Know your mobo's PHYSICAL pci/etc slot sharing layout and avoid any add-in cards for the latter shared slot (for good measure).

So basically, if you can't figure out where the problem is over time or have no luck diagnosing if/where Vegas 8 is the cause...then I'd do a complete re-install from OS to final applications.
