No rendered audio in Vegas 18 Pro

New installation of Vegas 18 Pro - no rendered audio on any video, any format. MP4, M2ts MPEG etc. There is audio in the timeline and audio is ticked in the template properties. Works perfectly in Vegas 17, but not in 18. I've checked the setting of both 17 and 18, side by side and they are identical. 17 will render audio with the video, 18 will not. Can not figure it out. Very frustrating. any ideas?

In Vegas Pro 18, what are your audio settings in Project Preferences as well as in your rendering settings? Is it 5.1?

Assuming the audio previews without issue, will the audio render or "Render to new track" in the (audio only) PCM format?

Well, I uninstalled the programme, and then reinstalled and it now I have no sound at all - nothing when I play from the timeline and nothing when rendering. Exactly the same audio settings as Vegas 17 - which works perfectly. Now at a total loss. No sound at all on 18, fine on 17 - both with same settings. The master bus shows no sound - not on mute.
