It sounds like your "mute" button is pressed in Vegas. When I first got this software I ran into the same thing. I would bring a AVI file in and there wouldent be any sound. After a while of tinkering I found that the mute button was on,I turned it off and everything was fine.

You say there's no sound attached - do you mean there's nothing on the audio track at all, or you just can't hear it? If the audio's there then my money's on the mute button but if not there's a different problem. What sort of avi file is it? And what's your default player?

Yes there is no audio track.
The Wizard of Oz [1939] (divx).avi from lime
I have played it on Media player and power DVD. I did have to download some codec to get it to work.

Sounds like you might have hit the same issue I just have. Microsoft in their usual show of great wisdom have chosen AVI1 as the container format for video captures with Windows Movie Maker. Unfortunately, Sonic Foundry did not include full AVI1 support in Vegas Movie Studio so you cannot access the audio unless you convert it.

According to the Microsoft docs this is done really easily at the software level so it is lame that Vegas doesn't support it and / or that Movie Maker doesn't give you the option to export in a usable format.

Here's the Microsoft page that discusses the differences:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/directshow/htm/type1vstype2dvfiles.asp

Apparently Ulead has a conversion utility but so far I have been unable to download it.

If anyone knows of a similar utility that works and is available please let me know.

Cheers
