No sound from Echo Audio Layla with Vegas 9

Having a strange problem with my setup. I have Vegas 9 running on Windows 7 and I'm attempting to edit some video I shot last week. The files appear fine visually, the audio tracks have audio waveforms, but when I play them there is no sound coming out of the device. The Preferences -> Audio settings look normal, the device appears in the list and is selected; the audio meters move when playing; the tracks are not muted, everything looks like I expect – there's just nothing coming out of the speakers. Everything else on the computer, including Sound Forge, SONAR, YouTube vids in a browser, Windows Media Player, etc., works like it should.

Does anyone have any idea what I might be missing here?

Check both Vegas audio device and the Layla control panel.
Where is the 'Options> Preferences> Audio device' assigned? Confirm all Layla's volume fader is not down or muted, and the assigned Layla output or 'virtual output', which could result in no sound monitors.
