No Sound in Rendered MPEG-2 File

Hello.  I am running Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Version 14.0.  When I render a video to the MPEG-2 format, there is no audio in the rendered file.  Using the same playback program, the audio in other MPEG-2 files plays.  The source files in Vegas are MPGs, obtained by a DVD rip in Vegas.  Audio exists and plays back in Vegas.  There are waveforms present. the Master Fader is set to -21 and the audio track is not muted.  I am using the Main Concept MPEG-2 Program Stream NTSC codec.  In the Audio tab of the template, Include Audio Stream is checked, Audio Mode is Stereo, Psychoacoustic Model 2 is selected, Audio Layer 2 is selected, Bit Rate is 224, Sample Rate is 48,000 and No Emphasis is selected.  Embedded CRC Error Protection is checked.   Under Template Info I see: Audio: 224 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, MPEG.  My default playback device in Windows 10 is Speakers / Headphones (Realtek Audio).   The Audio Device Type in Vegas Preferences is set to Windows Classic Wave Driver and the Default Stereo and Front Playback Device is set to Speakers / Headphones (Realtek Audio).  All other Audio Device Preferences are set to  their default values. I have tried the other Audio Device Types and the problem of no audio in the rendered file persists.   If I render to another format, WMV for example, sound is present in the rendered file.  My computer is a Dell XPS 8910 with an Intel i7-6700 CPU, 3.40 GHz with 16 GB of RAM. I'm stumped...

Thanks for your reply, Cornico.

I played the file in VLC Media Player. I played it a number of ways: 1. Using the Play File button in Vegas right after rendering, 2. Double clicking the file in Explorer which then launches VLC with the file, 3. Opening the file directly in VLC. As mentioned, audio plays when I open another MPEG-2 file in the same instance of VLC that didn't play audio on the rendered file. So it's not a playback issue.

When I drag the rendered file onto the Veg as timeline I get only video, no audio.

Thank you so much, Cornico.  Your question about my steps was spot on and led to an understanding of where I was going wrong.  I was working in a large project and wanted to render only the loop region.  I never knew there was a “Render loop region only” option in the Render As dialog box .  I’ll spare you the details (unless you’re curious) of the convoluted workflow I was using to render only the loop region, but my discovery of this setting solved the problem of no audio in the rendered file.  I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that setting escaped me.  I will say that my weird workflow generated an MPEG-2 file with audio in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 12.  Something has obviously changed since then.

Your technical skill is impressive. I have watched you help others and I truly appreciate your help. Thanks again!
