No Sound track when importing .avi clips

Hi, I'm new to Vegas and I'm trying to work on .avi clips which were shot with a Small Wonder camcorder. I import the .avi file from my hard drive into Vegas, then move it to the time line, but only the video shows up, no sound track comes in with it. I know there is sound with these clips because I can play them with the RCA software, and with Windows Movie Maker. Any suggestions? Thanks

Sounds like you have a missing/incorrect codec. This seems to be a common problem. I had a similar one except I got audio but no video. I got the right codec and the problem went away. Goto the following link and go get the free codec in the link of the response. Hopefully, this will solve your problem.

(sorry, forgot to add the link)

I occasionally have this problem too.

The simplest answer I've found is to re-make the clip in Windows Movie Maker.
If Movie Maker can read the file, and create a high-quality WMV file, then Vegas can generally import the WMV, and use it just fine for audio and video.

I turn up the bit-rate / filesize as large as possible in MovieMaker to minimize any re-compression problems.

Hi Mike, thanks for the help. I went and downloaded the K-lite Codec Full pack referred to in the link you sent. I ran it and set it up as best I can. It seems to have added some codecs, but nothing happened with the Vegas. Vegas still does not find any sound with my .avi files. Now, once I 'convert' my .avi files over to .wmv, then Vegas finds the sound track and brings it in. That does work, but I hate to have to convert all my clips before I can edit, seems like an extra step that should be included in the Vegas software. K-lite tools has a program called G-Spot .codec Information. When I run that on one of my .avi files it says that the codec for the file is (MPEG (MP1/MP2)). I guess that is still missing from my Vegas??

Thanks for the help abelenky. I have found the same thing, that if I "convert" the clip from .avi over to .wmv, then Vegas can find the sound track just fine. It's just a pain to have to convert any clip I choose to edit. Wish I could figure out a better answer!!

You didn't mention which version you are running. Are you using VMS 9.0b? If you have 9.0 and not running 9.0b, then download it and install it. Sony had some problems with the earlier 2 versions of 9.0 and some of that was in regards to codecs.

Hi Mike, sorry I didn't specify the ver. I'm running 9.0b, build 92. I downloaded the update thinking it might fix my problem, but no luck, i'm still trying to figure it out.

thanks, larry.k

Back in July/August when I first started using VMS 9, I was having codec problems, I was getting audio but no video. Forum user Eugenia came to the rescue. Follow the link below and try downloading the codecs she suggested, perhaps they will solve your problem.

Ablenky can you change MPEG-2 TS files to WMV files on Movie Maker???
