No text on video

I have spent hours trying to get text overlay on my video. I'm using the media generator title and text feature. When placed on track 2 or track 3 there is no visual evidence of the text. I tried to cheat and lay it right on the video track. Even though the background shows transparent, it's blacked out on the video. When I'm using the editor, the text box shows up and I can move it but there is no text in it. I'm teky but I've just purchased the program and I'm still learning. I've checked the forums and watch tutorials and from what I can see, I'm doing it correctly - there's just no text.

Any suggestions?

Put in on a new track above your video. Let us know if that works.

I inserted a video track above the video, inserted the text media and it didn't work.

Next? :)

Can you post a screen shot of what you have on your timeline when you're trying to do this? Often we've been able to catch something the user has done wrong this way and point out a quick simple solution.

I tried the color thing but it didn't help. If I put it on the video track, it covers the actual video. I have a screen shot but I don't know how to paste it here. Is there some other place that I should paste it?

Upload it to any file sharing service, dropbox.com is a good one. Then post the link here.

Your observation about putting it on the video track is correct. Any events on the same track that overlap either crossfade (if both extend outside the overlap), or the shorter one replaces the longer one if contained completely within the longer one.

In the mean time, make sure of ...
- the track with the text isn't muted or set to 0% opacity
- the text event itself has an alpha greater than 0.
- you don't have pan/crop or track motion applied that would move the text outside the frame
- if you have any effects applied to the text or the track it's on, try temporarily disabling them
- the text is definitely on a track above the video
- the text track isn't a compositing child of another track
- the compositing mode of the text track should probably be Source Alpha
Any of these can render the text invisible.

I found it! The "solo" button was pushed in on the video track.. When I took it off, the text showed up immediately!

You are right, you would have seen it in a screen shot. I'm not sure how or when I hit it. It must have been shortly after I downloaded the program because it didn't work on my last project.

Thank you all so much! I'm excited about learning more and I know I can count on y'all to help me find my goofy mistakes.

Have a great day!
